Tally to Odoo Migration in the UAE: VAT 201 History, AED and Cutover
Tally to Odoo migration for UAE businesses: TallyPrime data mapping, VAT 201 history, AED and PDCs, free zones, Arabic invoices, e-invoicing and cutover.
TallyPrime does UAE VAT well for a single-user, single-location business. The pressure comes from branches, warehouses, free zone entities and the e-invoicing mandate. Our Tally to Odoo migration service moves UAE books into a full ERP without losing the VAT trail.
This guide is for owners, finance managers and accountants in Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Sharjah and the free zones. For the generic data scope, export steps and India GST setup, read our Tally to Odoo migration cost and data scope guide first.
Why do UAE businesses migrate from TallyPrime to Odoo?
UAE businesses migrate Tally to Odoo when VAT compliance is fine but operations have outgrown an accounting-first tool. TallyPrime's UAE edition files VAT 201 returns, prints bilingual invoices and generates the FTA audit file, so the trigger is rarely tax.
Tally's own UAE pages say TallyPrime can upload and submit VAT 201 filings directly to EmaraTax, generate the FTA audit file, track reverse charge liability and record designated zone transactions.
- Users and licensing: TallyPrime's UAE subscription is AED 78 a month for a single user; multi-user access strains once a Jebel Ali warehouse and a Deira office both need live stock.
- Inventory depth: batch and expiry, landed costs from import duty, multi-warehouse transfers and barcode picking end up in Excel next to Tally.
- Multi-entity: a mainland LLC, a free zone FZCO and a KSA branch become three Tally companies with manual consolidation.
- E-invoicing: the UAE mandate requires an Accredited Service Provider connection and structured invoice data, which pushes many companies to pick their long-term ERP now.
Weighing a Tally alternative in the UAE? Decide on the operational gaps first; VAT is a constraint the new system must meet, not the reason to move.
What is different about a Tally to Odoo migration in the UAE?

A UAE Tally to Odoo migration swaps the GST layer for FTA VAT, adds emirate and free zone tagging, and has to respect VAT return periods, AED cash habits and Arabic documents. The table shows where the UAE project departs from the India version.
| Area | TallyPrime UAE | Odoo 20 with UAE localization |
|---|---|---|
| Tax regime | 5% VAT, VAT 201, FTA audit file | l10n_ae taxes, VAT 201 report in FTA format, corporate tax report |
| Party identity | TRN on each party ledger | TRN field on each contact; empty TRN prints a simplified tax invoice |
| Place of supply | Emirate selected per voucher | Emirate on the contact, tax grids per emirate in the VAT return |
| Currency | AED books, foreign currency ledgers | AED company currency, Central Bank of the UAE rate sync |
| Language | Bilingual Arabic-English invoices | Gulf Cooperation Council Format option on invoices and POS receipts |
| E-invoicing | Connected VAT filing; ASP link depends on vendor | Structured invoice data; ASP connection planned with your partner |
Odoo's UAE localization documentation lists three modules: l10n_ae, l10n_ae_reports and l10n_ae_pos. They provide the chart of accounts, VAT tax groups, the VAT return in the FTA format, the corporate tax report and compliant POS receipts.
HSN codes, e-way bills and GSTR matching disappear; what replaces them is smaller in volume but less forgiving on dates.
How does TallyPrime UAE data map to Odoo?
TallyPrime UAE masters map to Odoo contacts, products, taxes and warehouses, while VAT ledgers become tax groups and emirate fields rather than accounts you post to by hand.
| TallyPrime UAE item | Becomes in Odoo | Treatment |
|---|---|---|
| Ledger groups and ledgers | UAE chart of accounts | Maps, usually to fewer accounts |
| Sundry debtors and creditors with TRN | Customers and vendors with TRN and emirate | Moves |
| VAT ledgers (output, input, RCM) | VAT payable and receivable accounts plus tax groups | Maps |
| Tax rates and designated zone flags | 5%, 0%, exempt, out of scope taxes and fiscal positions | Maps |
| Stock items, units, godowns | Products, units of measure, warehouses and locations | Moves and maps |
| Cost centres and categories | Analytic accounts and plans | Maps |
| Foreign currency ledgers | Multi-currency journals in AED company | Maps |
| Post-dated cheque entries | PDC journals or deferred receipts and payments | Rebuilt |
| Opening balances and open bills | One opening entry plus open invoices and bills | Moves |
| Filed VAT 201 returns | Stay on EmaraTax; Tally kept as archive | Stays |
Load in order: chart of accounts and taxes, then contacts and products, then opening stock, open invoices and bills, and the opening entry last. Carry Tally ledger names as External IDs, which Odoo's import guide says can come from previous software to ease the transition.
Split large files, because Odoo warns that big imports can time out. Clean the TRN column: a customer with no TRN gets a simplified tax invoice, and Odoo's docs suggest entering N/A when a full tax invoice is required but the TRN is unavailable.
How do you move 5% VAT history and filed VAT 201 returns?
You do not move filed VAT 201 returns into Odoo; you move the VAT balances they produced, and you keep Tally as the archive that supports them. The FTA already holds every return you filed, so Odoo only needs to be right from the cutover date forward.
The UAE Tax Procedures regulations (Cabinet Decision 74 of 2023) require accounting records to be kept for five years after the tax period they relate to, longer for real estate. A read-only Tally company, backed up and tested, covers the pre-Odoo years at no migration cost.
What does move:
- VAT control balances: output VAT payable and input VAT recoverable at the cutover date, posted in the opening entry to the localization's VAT accounts.
- Unsettled returns: if the last Tally period is filed but not paid, carry the liability as a payable to the FTA, not as VAT on new transactions.
- Open reverse charge items: imported services not yet declared go into Odoo so the RCM lines appear on the first Odoo return.
- Open invoices and bills with their VAT split: each open document carries its taxable amount and 5% VAT so later credit notes post correctly.
- Adjustments in flight: bad debt relief, input tax apportionment and prior voluntary disclosures are noted so the first Odoo return does not repeat them.
Full voucher history can be loaded too, but it is rarely worth it: return-level history already lives on EmaraTax, and the Tally archive covers any drill-down an auditor asks for.
How do you handle AED, foreign currencies and post-dated cheques?
Set AED as the company currency, let Odoo pull rates from the Central Bank of the UAE, and rebuild post-dated cheques as a controlled journal rather than importing them as Tally entries. These cause most reconciliation gaps.
Odoo's UAE localization synchronizes foreign currency rates through a built-in connection with the Central Bank of the UAE. Tally users who keyed USD and EUR rates by hand gain a clean trail. Import foreign currency opening balances at the Tally rate on the cutover date so the AED totals match.
Post-dated cheques are central to UAE trading finance, and TallyPrime records them as dated vouchers. In Odoo, use a separate PDC receivable and payable journal with the cheque date as maturity, and move the amount to the bank journal on clearance. Import only cheques still open at cutover.
Bank reconciliation is the final check. The opening bank balance in Odoo must equal the reconciled Tally balance, not the ledger balance. Our guide on how Odoo Accounting works explains journals and reconciliation for teams new to Odoo.
What changes for free zone and designated zone companies?
Free zone companies migrate the same masters, but designated zone goods movements, mainland branches and exports need Odoo taxes and fiscal positions set up before any transaction is imported. Tally tracked this with ledgers; Odoo tracks it with tax configuration.
Odoo's UAE taxes include 5% standard, zero-rated, exempt, import VAT and out of scope, and the docs say these can be applied to products or managed dynamically through fiscal positions. That is where designated zone logic belongs.
- Designated zone to designated zone: qualifying goods transfers get an out of scope or zero-rated position, matched to how your Tally VAT ledgers treated them.
- Designated zone to mainland: supplies into the mainland follow standard 5% treatment; a fiscal position by customer emirate and location applies the right tax automatically.
- Exports: zero-rated exports keep input VAT recovery, so map Tally's zero-rated sales ledger to Odoo's zero-rated tax, not to exempt.
- Several entities: a mainland LLC and a free zone entity with separate TRNs run as two companies in one database on the Custom plan, each with its own VAT return.
Confirm each treatment with your tax adviser before go-live; the migration team's job is to make Odoo apply the agreed rule every time.
How do you get Arabic tax invoices and documents in Odoo?
Odoo prints Arabic and English on the same tax invoice or POS receipt once the Gulf Cooperation Council Format option is enabled, and it can issue documents per customer language.
Odoo's UAE documentation describes two levels. The Language field on a contact drives every document for that customer. At company level, the Gulf Cooperation Council Format option under Customer Invoices, and under Bills and Receipts for Point of Sale, adds Arabic as a secondary language.
The Tax Procedures regulations allow records in English and say the Authority may, at its discretion, request translation of some or all of them into Arabic. Bilingual invoices from day one avoid a translation scramble during an FTA audit.
Odoo issues a Tax Invoice (B2B) or a Simplified Tax Invoice (B2C) based on whether the customer's TRN is filled, so clean TRN data in the Tally export decides which document your customers receive.
Is Odoo ready for UAE e-invoicing after you leave Tally?
Odoo gives you structured invoice data and the UAE tax configuration the e-invoicing mandate depends on, but the Accredited Service Provider connection is a project item you must plan. Migrating now lets you fix the data model before the deadlines.
The UAE Ministry of Finance set a pilot from 1 July 2026, mandatory e-invoicing from 1 January 2027 for businesses with AED 50 million or more in revenue, and from 1 July 2027 for the rest. A June 2026 update moved the first-phase date to appoint an Accredited Service Provider to 30 October 2026.
Odoo's 20.0 UAE localization documentation lists accounting, reporting and POS modules but no e-invoicing module yet. The ASP link is handled through an app or integration agreed with your partner.
Use the migration to fix the fields e-invoicing will need: legal names, TRNs, emirate and address lines on every contact, and a tax on every line. Our guide to Odoo VAT, FTA and GCC compliance covers the regional picture.
When should a UAE business cut over from Tally to Odoo?
Cut over on the first day of a VAT tax period, file the last Tally return from Tally, and file the first Odoo return from Odoo. A split period forces you to combine two systems into one VAT 201, which is where errors and voluntary disclosures start.
The FTA's VAT topics page says you must file your VAT return and pay within 28 days from the end of your tax period, and most businesses are on quarterly periods. The FTA site listed 28 October 2026 as the deadline for the latest returns.
| Cutover option | VAT 201 impact | Corporate tax impact | Our view |
|---|---|---|---|
| First day of a tax quarter | One system per return | Mid-year opening entry | Best for most SMEs |
| 1 January | One system per return, full tax year in Odoo | Full financial year in Odoo | Best if you can wait |
| Mid-period | Return split across Tally and Odoo | Split year | Avoid |
| Month start on monthly periods | One system per return | Mid-year | Fine for monthly filers |
A realistic UAE sequence looks like this:
- Weeks 1 to 2, Tally audit: list companies, TRNs, tax periods, VAT ledgers, designated zone flags, PDC books and foreign currency ledgers.
- Weeks 2 to 4, setup and pilot: configure the UAE localization, taxes and fiscal positions, load one quarter of data and match the Tally VAT 201 to Odoo's VAT return.
- Weeks 4 to 6, parallel period: run one real tax period in both systems and compare the two VAT returns line by line.
- Period end, cutover: freeze Tally, post the opening entry, import open items, go live over a weekend.
- Day 28 after period end: file the last Tally return from Tally and the first Odoo return from Odoo, each with its own records.
Most UAE SME moves fit 6 to 10 weeks; several Tally entities or heavy inventory take longer. Hypercare runs until the first Odoo VAT return is filed and paid.
What does a Tally to Odoo migration cost in the UAE?
On iVentureTeam's published ranges, a UAE Tally to Odoo project costs $3k to $9k for a small firm and $9k to $27k for a mid-size firm, with data migration at $1.2k to $9k, plus Odoo licenses. These are ranges in US dollars, not quotes.
| Scope | Typical UAE setup | iVentureTeam range | Timeline |
|---|---|---|---|
| Small, 5 to 25 users | One TRN, accounting, sales and stock | $3k to $9k | 4 to 8 weeks |
| Mid-size, 25 to 100 users | Mainland plus free zone entity, warehouses, PDC flows | $9k to $27k | 8 to 14 weeks |
| Large, 100+ users | Several entities, GCC branches, integrations | $27k to $150k+ | 12 to 24 weeks |
| Data migration from TallyPrime | Masters, open items, VAT balances, chosen history | $1.2k to $9k | Inside the project |
Licenses are extra. On the Odoo pricing page, the US list price billed yearly is US$31.10 per user a month for Standard and US$61.00 for Custom, with first-year prices of US$24.90 and US$49.00, and a Light User at US$8.90. Check the currency shown for your region when you order.
TallyPrime's UAE subscription is AED 78 a month per single user, so Odoo costs more per user but replaces the Excel, CRM and stock tools around Tally. Price drivers are TRNs and companies, PDC and foreign currency volume, warehouses and batch tracking, and TDL customizations to rebuild.

Tally to Odoo migration in the UAE case study: bilingual Arabic receipts for a Middle East retailer
A Middle East retail business needed every POS receipt in Arabic and English, with taxable and non-taxable amounts itemized, printed at counter speed. It shows the Arabic and tax presentation work UAE Tally users expect.
The retailer's Odoo 11 Point of Sale printed single-language slips that Arabic-speaking customers could not read. iVentureTeam rebuilt the receipt template so product name, taxable amount, non-taxable amount, subtotal and total appear in both scripts, with right-to-left Arabic rendered correctly.
Printing was routed from Odoo through a Raspberry Pi to standard thermal printers, and the work was delivered in 3 weeks. The cashier's workflow did not change.

The bottom line on Tally to Odoo migration in the UAE
Move masters, open AED balances and VAT control accounts into Odoo's UAE localization, leave filed VAT 201 returns on EmaraTax with Tally as the archive, and cut over on the first day of a tax period. That plan keeps the FTA trail intact and the project short.
Spend the saved effort on what is new: designated zone fiscal positions, PDC journals, bilingual invoices and e-invoicing fields. Most UAE SMEs are live within 6 to 10 weeks.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can Odoo file UAE VAT returns like TallyPrime does?
+
Odoo's UAE localization produces the VAT return in the FTA's VAT 201 format and exports it to Excel or PDF for submission on EmaraTax. TallyPrime offers a connected upload; in Odoo the return is prepared in the system and filed on the portal.
Do I need to move my filed VAT 201 returns from Tally into Odoo?
+
No. Filed returns already sit with the FTA on EmaraTax. Move the VAT payable and recoverable balances at cutover, import open invoices and bills with their VAT split, and keep a read-only Tally archive for the five-year record rule.
How long must I keep my Tally records after moving to Odoo?
+
UAE Tax Procedures regulations require accounting records for five years after the tax period they relate to, and longer for real estate records. Keep a backed-up, read-only Tally company for those years rather than migrating every voucher.
Can Odoo print Arabic and English tax invoices?
+
Yes. Enable the Gulf Cooperation Council Format option in Accounting settings for tax invoices and in Point of Sale settings for receipts, and Odoo adds Arabic as a secondary language. You can also set a language per customer.
How do free zone companies handle VAT in Odoo?
+
Designated zone and mainland treatments are set up as taxes and fiscal positions, so the right rate applies by product, customer and location. Separate TRNs run as separate companies in one database on the Custom plan, each with its own VAT return.
When is the best time to migrate Tally to Odoo in Dubai?
+
On the first day of a VAT tax period, usually a quarter start, or on 1 January if you want the full financial year in Odoo. File the last Tally return from Tally and the first Odoo return from Odoo. Avoid mid-period cutovers.
How much does a Tally to Odoo migration cost in the UAE?
+
On iVentureTeam's published ranges, small firms fall in $3k to $9k and mid-size firms in $9k to $27k, with data migration at $1.2k to $9k, plus Odoo licenses. Entities, TRNs, PDC volume and inventory depth move the number.
Is Odoo ready for UAE e-invoicing?
+
Odoo holds the structured invoice data and UAE tax setup the mandate needs, but the Accredited Service Provider connection is planned with your partner. First-phase businesses above AED 50 million face a 1 January 2027 deadline; others follow on 1 July 2027.
Can Tally and Odoo run in parallel during the move?
+
Yes, for one tax period. Record the period in both systems, compare the two VAT 201 returns line by line, then freeze Tally. Longer parallel runs double the data entry without adding assurance.
