Odoo UAE VAT and Corporate Tax Setup: Step by Step for Odoo 19 and 20
Set up Odoo UAE VAT and corporate tax in Odoo 19 and 20: TRNs, taxes, fiscal positions, reverse charge, VAT201 filing, corporate tax tags and e-invoicing.
Most "Odoo UAE VAT" guides list six generic steps and stop. This one walks through the exact Odoo 19 and 20 settings for VAT and corporate tax, in the order our Odoo consulting services team uses on UAE projects.
It is written for finance managers, accountants and Odoo admins at UAE companies. For the wider GCC picture, including Saudi ZATCA, read our guide to Odoo for UAE VAT, FTA e-invoicing and GCC compliance.
What does the Odoo UAE localization include in Odoo 19 and 20?
The Odoo UAE localization includes a UAE chart of accounts, preconfigured VAT taxes, a VAT201 return and a Corporate Tax Report in both Odoo 19 and Odoo 20. The Odoo UAE localization documentation lists three modules.
| Module | Technical name | What it gives you |
|---|---|---|
| United Arab Emirates - Accounting | l10n_ae | Chart of accounts, VAT taxes, tax groups, journals |
| United Arab Emirates - Accounting Reports | l10n_ae_reports | VAT return and Corporate Tax Report |
| United Arab Emirates - Point of Sale | l10n_ae_pos | Local compliance behavior for POS receipts |
The chart of accounts follows IFRS with separate VAT payable and receivable accounts. Currency rates can sync automatically from the Central Bank of the UAE.
The UAE pages for Odoo 19 and Odoo 20 are nearly identical. Our Odoo 20 accounting release notes cover the wider accounting changes.
Which UAE VAT and corporate tax rules does your Odoo setup need to follow?

Your Odoo setup must follow six UAE rules: the 5% rate, registration thresholds, the 28-day VAT return deadline, the 0% and 9% corporate tax bands, small business relief and the nine-month corporate tax return deadline. Each one maps to a setting in Odoo.
| UAE rule | Official figure | Where it lives in Odoo |
|---|---|---|
| Standard VAT rate | 5% since 1 January 2018 | Default sales and purchase taxes |
| VAT registration | Mandatory at AED 375,000, voluntary at AED 187,500 | Company TRN on the company record |
| VAT return deadline | File and pay within 28 days of the period end | Tax Return Periodicity and reminders |
| Corporate tax rate | 0% up to AED 375,000, 9% above | Corporate Tax Report |
| Small business relief | Revenue of AED 3 million or less, periods ending by 31 December 2029 | Revenue reporting and an annual election |
| Corporate tax return | Within nine months of the tax period end | Annual closing calendar |
The VAT figures come from the Ministry of Finance VAT page and the 28-day rule from the FTA VAT topics page. The Ministry confirmed the 0% and 9% corporate tax bands, effective from financial years starting on or after 1 June 2023.
How do you set up Odoo UAE VAT step by step?
You set up Odoo UAE VAT in eight steps, from installing the localization to testing one invoice of every type before go-live. Do them in this order, because later steps depend on clean company and contact data.
- Install the localization: create the company with country United Arab Emirates so the UAE fiscal package loads, then install UAE Accounting Reports if it is not already active.
- Fill company data: legal name in English and Arabic, address, emirate and your 15-digit TRN on the company record.
- Set the return period: in Accounting, Configuration, Settings, open Tax Return Periodicity and choose quarterly or monthly to match your FTA tax period, plus the reminder deadline.
- Review taxes: keep the localization taxes, archive duplicates created over the years, and check every tax has the right tax group and tax grid.
- Map fiscal positions: set up positions for exports, designated zone or GCC cases you handle, and imported services under reverse charge.
- Clean contacts: add a TRN to every VAT-registered customer and supplier, because Odoo uses the TRN field to decide the invoice type.
- Turn on Arabic layouts: enable the Gulf Cooperation Council Format option for tax invoices and, if you sell in stores, for POS receipts.
- Test before go-live: post a B2B invoice, a B2C invoice, an export, a credit note and an imported service bill, then open the VAT report and confirm each lands in the right box.
Step 6 is where most databases fail. A customer with a TRN gets a Tax Invoice; without one, Odoo issues a Simplified Tax Invoice, silently.
Which UAE VAT taxes and fiscal positions should you use in Odoo?
Use the five tax types the UAE localization already provides: standard 5%, zero-rated, exempt, import VAT and out of scope. Creating your own versions breaks the link between the tax and the VAT201 boxes.
| Tax type | When to use it | Input VAT recovery |
|---|---|---|
| Standard 5% | Most local sales and purchases of goods and services | Generally recoverable |
| Zero-rated 0% | Qualifying exports, international transport, some health and education | Fully recoverable |
| Exempt | Some financial services, local passenger transport | Not recoverable on related costs |
| Import VAT | Goods imported into the UAE | Declared as VAT amount only |
| Out of scope | Transactions outside the UAE, internal adjustments | Not reported as supplies |
For import VAT, Odoo's documentation notes that only the VAT amount is declared. Exports are zero-rated only "subject to qualifying conditions", so attach export evidence to the invoice.
Apply these taxes through fiscal positions rather than editing each product. A fiscal position on the customer swaps 5% for zero-rated on an export automatically.
How do you handle reverse charge and import VAT in Odoo?
Handle reverse charge in Odoo with a fiscal position that books the same VAT as both output and input on the supplier bill. The result is usually net zero when the VAT is fully recoverable.
Reverse charge moves the duty to account for VAT from a non-resident supplier to you, the UAE VAT-registered buyer, typically on imported services.
- Imported services: assign a reverse charge fiscal position to foreign service suppliers, such as software or consulting vendors abroad.
- Imported goods: record import VAT on the customs or freight bill, using the import VAT tax, not a manual journal entry.
- Check the report: after posting, the reverse charge amount should appear on both the output and input side of the VAT return.
- Watch partial recovery: with exempt supplies, input VAT is not fully recoverable, so the result is not net zero.
On the Odoo forum, a UAE user asked for help with VAT and import tax use cases; the only reply pointed back to the l10n_ae module. The module is the start, not the answer.
How do you file the UAE VAT201 return from Odoo?
Odoo builds the VAT201 return, runs automatic checks, locks the period and exports Excel or PDF, but you still submit it on EmaraTax. The VAT report follows the FTA format and shows output VAT, input VAT, reverse charge VAT, and zero-rated and exempt sales.
The flow follows Odoo's tax return documentation, which is the same in Odoo 19 and 20:
- Open the return: from the Accounting dashboard, open the Tax Returns journal and pick the period.
- Clear the checks: Odoo flags draft entries, bills without attachments, missing company data and taxes that do not match the customer country.
- Validate: once checks pass, Odoo posts the closing entry in the Tax Returns journal and updates the tax lock date.
- Export: download the report as Excel or PDF and key the figures into the VAT201 form on EmaraTax.
- Mark as submitted and paid: record the submission and the payment in Odoo so the VAT payable account clears.
After posting, the period is locked for VAT entries, so corrections go into the next period.
How do you set up Odoo UAE corporate tax reporting?
Set up the Odoo UAE Corporate Tax Report by tagging your exempt income, allowable deduction and disallowed expense accounts, because Odoo configures none of them by default. Without tags, the report shows accounting profit, not taxable income.
The report sits under Accounting, Reporting, Corporate Tax Report and shows net profit, exempt income, allowable deductions, adjustments for disallowed expenses and the corporate tax amount. Odoo's documentation states that users must classify these accounts manually.
| Account group | Examples from Odoo's documentation | How to configure it |
|---|---|---|
| Exempt income | Qualifying dividends, gains on qualifying shares | Add the Exempted Income Accounts tag on the account |
| Allowable deductions | Salaries and benefits, rent, utilities, professional fees | Add the Allowable Deductions Accounts tag on the account |
| Disallowed expenses | Fines and penalties, personal costs, excess entertainment | Assign a fiscal category and set the rate and start date |
Ask your tax adviser to sign off the tagged account list. Our guide to how Odoo Accounting works explains where account tags sit.
How do small business relief and the 9% band affect your Odoo setup?
Small business relief lets resident persons with revenue of AED 3 million or less be treated as having no taxable income, and the Ministry has extended it to tax periods ending on or before 31 December 2029. That changes how much detail some firms need in Odoo, not whether they need clean books.
The Ministry announced the extension of small business relief to 31 December 2029 in August 2026 under Ministerial Decision No. 131. The FTA's corporate tax guidance says revenue must stay within AED 3 million in the current and all previous tax periods.
- Track revenue per period: a revenue report by tax period warns you early if you near AED 3 million.
- Know the trade-off: under the relief, other exemptions and deductions are not available for that period.
- Free zone firms: a Qualifying Free Zone Person cannot elect the relief, so their tagging must be complete.
- Above the relief: for taxable income above AED 375,000, the 9% rate applies, and the account tags drive the result.
The FTA reminds businesses to file corporate tax returns within nine months of the tax period end. For a December year end, that means 30 September of the next year.
Is your Odoo ready for UAE e-invoicing?
Odoo 19 and 20 cover UAE VAT accounting, but they do not create PINT AE e-invoices or act as a UAE access point, so you need an accredited service provider. Clean VAT setup is the first step of e-invoicing readiness.
The Ministry kept 1 January 2027 as the go-live for businesses with revenue of AED 50 million or more and moved their ASP appointment deadline to 30 October 2026. Smaller businesses follow later in 2027.
Every TRN and tax group you fix for VAT is a field the e-invoice will carry. Our Odoo UAE e-invoicing setup guide covers PINT AE mapping, ASP choice and EmaraTax onboarding in detail.
What Odoo UAE VAT mistakes should you fix before the next return?
Fix duplicate taxes, missing TRNs, manual journal entries and unlocked periods before your next VAT return, because each one moves figures into the wrong VAT201 box. These are the issues we find most often in UAE databases.
- Duplicate taxes: a second "VAT 5%" created by hand often has no tax grid, so its amounts never reach the return.
- Missing customer TRNs: B2B customers receive Simplified Tax Invoices they cannot use to recover VAT.
- VAT in manual entries: journal entries with a VAT amount but no tax line bypass the report.
- Old versions: Odoo 17 standard support ended in September 2026, as our Odoo version support timeline shows, so older UAE localizations no longer get fixes.
- Open periods: posting a late bill into a filed quarter changes a return you already submitted.

The bottom line on Odoo UAE VAT
Odoo 19 and 20 can run UAE VAT and corporate tax well, but only after you clean contacts, keep the localization taxes and tag your corporate tax accounts. The software is ready; most databases are not.
Start with TRNs, then taxes and fiscal positions, then corporate tax tags. Test one invoice of every type before you trust the return.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does Odoo support UAE VAT?
+
Yes. Odoo 19 and 20 include a UAE localization with a chart of accounts, 5% VAT, zero-rated, exempt, import and out of scope taxes, and a VAT return in the FTA format. You still submit the return on EmaraTax.
Can Odoo file the VAT201 return directly with the FTA?
+
No. Odoo builds the VAT201 report, runs checks and exports it as Excel or PDF. You then enter the figures on EmaraTax and mark the return as submitted and paid in Odoo.
Does Odoo calculate UAE corporate tax?
+
Odoo 19 and 20 include a Corporate Tax Report showing net profit, exempt income, deductions, disallowed expenses and the tax amount. You must tag the relevant accounts first, as none are configured by default.
How does Odoo decide between a Tax Invoice and a Simplified Tax Invoice?
+
It uses the TRN field on the customer. With a TRN, Odoo issues a Tax Invoice; without one, a Simplified Tax Invoice. Odoo 20 documentation says to enter N/A in the TRN field to force a Tax Invoice.
How do I set up reverse charge VAT in Odoo for the UAE?
+
Use a fiscal position for foreign suppliers without UAE VAT registration. It records the VAT as both output and input on the bill, which usually nets to zero when the VAT is fully recoverable.
Can I print UAE invoices in Arabic and English from Odoo?
+
Yes. Enable the Gulf Cooperation Council Format option in Accounting settings for tax invoices, and in Point of Sale settings for receipts. Set each customer's language for their documents.
Is small business relief still available in 2027?
+
Yes. The Ministry of Finance extended small business relief to tax periods ending on or before 31 December 2029, for resident persons with revenue of AED 3 million or less in the current and all previous periods.
Is Odoo 19 or Odoo 20 better for UAE tax compliance?
+
Both have the same UAE VAT and corporate tax features. Choose based on support life and your other apps; Odoo 20 is the newest release and gets the longest support window.
Does Odoo handle UAE e-invoicing?
+
Not on its own. Odoo does not create PINT AE files or act as a UAE access point, so you connect it to an accredited service provider through a connector or API integration.
