Salesforce to Odoo Migration: What Moves, What to Rebuild, and Cost cover

Most articles on leaving Salesforce stop at "Odoo costs less". Often true, but the money is saved or lost in the details: which objects import cleanly, which automations you rebuild, and how you cut over without losing pipeline. Our Odoo migration services are built around those details.

This guide is for sales leaders, founders and IT managers planning a Salesforce replacement on Odoo 19 or Odoo 20. To see how Odoo CRM works day to day first, read our Odoo CRM guide for sales teams, then come back for the migration plan.

Why do companies replace Salesforce with Odoo?

Companies replace Salesforce with Odoo when the per-user bill, the add-on list and the gap between CRM and the back office cost more than the features they use. The pattern repeats across the projects we see.

  • Price per seat: the Odoo pricing page lists Standard at US$31.10 and Custom at US$61.00 per user a month billed yearly, every app included. Salesforce lists Sales Cloud from US$25 (Starter) to US$175 (Enterprise), US$350 (Unlimited) and US$550 (Agentforce 1 Sales).
  • Add-ons: Salesforce sells the web services API, Premier Support and several Einstein features as extras on lower editions. Odoo's Custom plan includes the external API, Studio and multi-company.
  • One database: a won opportunity in Odoo becomes a quotation, a delivery and an invoice with no integration. In Salesforce, orders and invoices usually live elsewhere.
  • Admin load: mid-size Salesforce orgs often need a part-time admin or agency to keep Flows and reports alive. Odoo automation rules and Studio are closer to end-user tools.
  • Light seats: managers who only read dashboards can be Light Users at US$8.90 a month, which keeps the full-user count down.

None of this makes Salesforce a bad product. It means a 20-user team that uses pipeline, activities and quotes rarely needs an edition built for 2,000 users, and Odoo CRM is a credible Salesforce alternative for that team.

What moves from Salesforce to Odoo, and what has to be rebuilt?

Salesforce to Odoo: What moves and what you rebuild

Standard records move with a mapped import; configuration and code do not move at all. This is the mapping we use at the start of every Salesforce to Odoo migration.

AccountContact (company)MovesKeep the Salesforce ID as the external ID; parent accounts become parent companies

Reports and dashboardsPivot, graph, DashboardsRebuildRecreate the ten you use, then stop

Odoo's export and import documentation recommends using the ID from the previous software as the external ID, so repeated imports update records instead of duplicating them. That habit removes half the pain in a Salesforce data migration.

How do you export data from Salesforce before the move?

Export everything once, including files and archived records, and store it outside Salesforce before you touch Odoo. Salesforce offers three practical routes.

  1. Data Export in Setup: weekly exports on Enterprise, Performance and Unlimited; Professional and lower can run it every 29 days. Files are zips of CSVs of about 512 MB and are deleted 48 hours after the email arrives, so download at once.
  2. Data Loader: the desktop client for bulk queries. Use "Export All" for archived records, and use it for field history, which Salesforce keeps for only 24 months.
  3. Report exports: fine for counts and samples, not for the migration. Formula and roll-up summary fields are excluded from Data Export too, so recalculate them in Odoo.

Write down a record count per object. At cutover you will compare it with Odoo. Export the metadata that describes your automations as well, because that list becomes the rebuild backlog.

How does Odoo CRM compare with Salesforce for a sales team?

Odoo CRM covers pipeline, activities, email, lead scoring and forecasting out of the box, while Salesforce goes deeper on territories, enterprise forecasting and its app marketplace. The honest Odoo CRM vs Salesforce view looks like this.

CapabilitySalesforce Sales CloudOdoo CRM
PipelinePer record type, highly configurableKanban per sales team, team switcher in Odoo 20

ActivitiesTasks, events, Activity Capture add-onScheduled activities with chaining and chatter on every record

Two Odoo features matter most for migrants. Predictive lead scoring learns from your imported won and lost records from day one. The win and loss analysis replaces the most common Salesforce pipeline dashboards with no build.

Where Salesforce still wins: territory hierarchies with hundreds of rules, forecasting across many business units, and niche third-party apps. If your team lives in those, test them in Odoo before you sign.

What changes in Odoo 19 and Odoo 20 CRM should you plan around?

Start a new Salesforce migration on Odoo 20 unless a third-party module you depend on exists only for Odoo 19. The CRM changes between the two are small but useful for former Salesforce teams.

Our Odoo 20 CRM release notes list five changes. The pipeline switcher flips between team pipelines without filters. Lead distribution sets each salesperson as always in rotation, in rotation with a monthly cap, or out of rotation.

Address fields moved off the main lead form to push users to create a real contact, good discipline for Salesforce leads that carry addresses but no linked contact. The Generate menu now groups lead sources, including CSV and Excel import.

AI is the other change. Odoo 20 runs AI on Odoo AI IAP credits at EUR 1 per credit, and the setting for your own OpenAI or Gemini key is gone. Our Odoo 20 AI features and IAP credit cost breakdown covers lead enrichment and summaries.

How much does a Salesforce to Odoo migration cost?

For a 10 to 50 user sales team, expect a one-off project of roughly US$5k to US$35k plus Odoo licenses, with the license saving often covering the project in year one. Here is how that number is built.

Our published Odoo implementation cost ranges put a small project at US$3k to US$9k over 4 to 8 weeks and a mid-size project at US$9k to US$27k over 8 to 14 weeks. Data migration adds US$1.2k to US$9k depending on the source system and years of history. These are ranges, not quotes.

The illustrative gap between Salesforce Enterprise and Odoo Custom is about US$34k a year at list prices. Your discount, edition and user count change it, so run your own numbers in the Odoo migration cost calculator and our Odoo pricing guide.

Odoo bills every internal user, so decide who needs a full seat, who can be a Light User and who only needs portal access. Our post on reducing Odoo per-user licensing cost walks through that exercise.

What does a Salesforce to Odoo cutover plan look like?

A good cutover runs in six steps over 6 to 12 weeks, with real Salesforce data loaded at least twice before go-live. This is the sequence we follow.

  1. Inventory (week 1): record counts per object, plus every Flow, Apex class, validation rule, report, dashboard, template and connected app marked keep, drop or replace.
  2. Design (weeks 1 to 2): map stages, record types and picklists to Odoo stages, teams and tags. Set the history policy: how many years of closed deals and chatter come across.
  3. Build (weeks 2 to 5): configure Odoo CRM, rebuild surviving automations, set up email, web forms and quotations. Write import scripts keyed on external IDs.
  4. Trial load (week 5 or 6): load the full export into a staging database, compare counts, spot-check 50 opportunities with their owners, fix and repeat.
  5. Training and parallel run (weeks 6 to 9): train by role, then enter new leads in Odoo while Salesforce stays read-only. Our Odoo ERP training is built around this stage.
  6. Cutover (one weekend): final delta export and import, switch web forms and email aliases to Odoo, then cancel Salesforce at renewal.

Keep the Salesforce export and the staging database for at least a year; managers ask about old deals long after the system is gone. For loading large files safely, see our guide on Odoo database migration.

What are the risks in a Salesforce to Odoo migration?

The risks are history, timelines and duplicates, not the master data. Each has a known fix if you plan for it.

  • Backdated records: Odoo stamps the creation date at import. A forum user asked how to backdate imported historical opportunities and got no answer. A script sets create, close and stage dates after import.
  • Activities: one user hit a database error on `res_model_id` when importing activities tied to CRM opportunities. Load open activities by script; archive completed ones as notes.
  • Chatter history: Odoo keeps history as messages, visible under technical messages filtered on CRM leads, with no report view. Decide early whether old emails and notes are worth loading.
  • Duplicates: Salesforce orgs often hold the same company three times. Dedupe before import, then use Odoo's merge similar opportunities tool for the rest.
  • Owners who left: deals owned by former reps need an archived Odoo user, or they land on the administrator and distort reporting.
  • Integrations: tools wired to Salesforce need new connectors. XML-RPC and JSON-RPC are deprecated in Odoo 20 with removal planned for Odoo 22, so build new links on the current JSON-2 API.

Which industries move from Salesforce to Odoo most often?

Product and project businesses move most often, because they gain most from a CRM in the same database as stock, projects and invoices. Pure enterprise software sales teams switch least.

When should you keep Salesforce or run both?

Keep Salesforce if revenue depends on Salesforce-only features, and run both for a defined period if you are moving the back office first. Three situations come up often.

A group where one division has a heavy Salesforce build and the others need an ERP: run Odoo as the ERP, sync accounts, products and won deals, and revisit CRM in a year. Our Odoo integration services design that sync with clear record ownership.

A team mid-contract: Salesforce contracts are annual, so time the Odoo go-live two to three months before renewal and use the remaining term as the parallel run. A small, clean Salesforce org: the easiest migration of all, so do not over-engineer it.

Odoo CRM consolidation case study: DataTile

DataTile did not come from Salesforce, but its project shows what a sales team gains when CRM, website and billing share one Odoo database. The UK survey-data provider had tracked inquiries manually in spreadsheets and inbox threads.

We rebuilt the website in Odoo Website, connected the Contact Us and Try for Free forms directly to Odoo CRM so every inquiry creates a lead instantly, and added Odoo Live Chat as a second capture channel. Two lead forms now auto-create CRM opportunities.

We also encoded tiered pricing, progressive discount tables and per-customer financial-year billing into Odoo Sales and Subscriptions, four billing rules in all, and added GA4 and Google Tag Manager for funnel tracking.

The 12-week project left DataTile running website, lead pipeline, quoting and subscription billing from one Odoo database, with no re-entry between marketing and sales. Read the DataTile Odoo website, CRM and subscriptions case study.

The bottom line on Salesforce to Odoo migration

Move to Odoo if your team uses pipeline, activities, quotes and reporting and your Salesforce bill has outgrown that use; stay if territories, enterprise forecasting or a niche AppExchange app drives revenue. For most 10 to 100 user teams, the license saving funds the project.

Treat the move as a CRM implementation with a careful data load. Inventory your automations, choose a history policy, load real data twice and cut over before the Salesforce renewal. Done that way, the switch takes weeks, not a year.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can you migrate from Salesforce to Odoo without losing data?

+

Accounts, contacts, leads, opportunities, products and files move through mapped imports keyed on Salesforce IDs. Chatter, completed activities and stage dates need scripts or an archive decision. Keep the full Salesforce export for a year.

How long does a Salesforce to Odoo migration take?

+

A clean org of 10 to 50 users usually takes 6 to 12 weeks from inventory to cutover, including two trial loads and a short parallel run. Heavy Flow rebuilds, many integrations or years of history push it toward the upper end.

How much does it cost to replace Salesforce with Odoo?

+

Our published ranges put data migration at US$1.2k to US$9k and a small Odoo implementation at US$3k to US$9k; mid-size projects run US$9k to US$27k. Odoo licenses are US$31.10 or US$61.00 per user a month billed yearly in the US.

Is Odoo CRM as good as Salesforce?

+

For pipeline, activities, email, lead scoring, quotes and standard reporting, Odoo CRM covers what most teams use and links directly to orders and invoices. Salesforce goes deeper on territories, enterprise forecasting and its app marketplace.

Can Salesforce Flows be migrated to Odoo?

+

No. Flows and Apex cannot be imported; each is rebuilt as an Odoo automation rule, server action, Studio change or small module. Many teams find a share of their automations is no longer needed once CRM and sales share one database.

Which Odoo version should a Salesforce migration start on?

+

Start on Odoo 20, released in September 2026, unless a third-party module you need exists only for Odoo 19. Odoo 20 CRM adds a pipeline team switcher, lead rotation caps and subscription upsells from the lead.

Does Odoo have a Salesforce connector?

+

Odoo does not ship an official Salesforce connector, though third-party modules exist and the external API supports custom sync. For a migration, a one-time scripted load is usually simpler and more reliable than a live connector.

What happens to Salesforce field history and reports?

+

Salesforce keeps field history for 24 months and removes older data, so export it with Data Loader before you leave. Reports and dashboards do not migrate; rebuild the ten you use as Odoo pivot and graph views or dashboards.
