Odoo 20 AI Features and IAP Credits: Monthly Cost Breakdown

What changed for AI in Odoo 20?

In Odoo 20, AI runs through Odoo's own AI service and is paid for with IAP credits, instead of your own OpenAI or Gemini account. Odoo's documentation now says "AI usage consumes IAP credits".

In Odoo 19, Odoo Online databases could use AI without a key, while Odoo.sh and on-premise databases had to add their own OpenAI or Gemini API key. In Odoo 20, those key settings are gone and Odoo chooses the model for each request.

How do Odoo IAP credits work?

IAP credits are prepaid units you buy in packs, and each Odoo service spends its own balance every time you use it. Nothing needs setting up: the first time a user triggers a paid service, Odoo uses the free trial credits and then asks you to buy more.

• Per service: Odoo AI, bill scanning, SMS and contact enrichment each have a separate balance.
• Per database: credits belong to one database and do not move between databases.
• No expiry: Odoo's IAP service pages say credits stay until used.
• Alerts: set an email alert threshold and the users who receive it.
• Auto-refill: a new pack can be bought automatically when the balance runs low.
• Refunds: unused credits can be refunded on request within 30 days of purchase.

Which Odoo 20 AI features use credits?

Every built-in AI feature in Odoo 20 draws on Odoo AI credits, while scanning, enrichment and messaging draw on their own services. The table shows where each feature is billed.

How much do Odoo IAP credits cost?

Odoo AI costs €1 per credit, bill scanning costs €0.05 to €0.15 per document, and contact enrichment costs about €0.06 per company. Prices below are as shown on Odoo's IAP pages in October 2026; your page may show your local currency.

Odoo says AI "credit usage varies based on the specific AI feature, task complexity, and the size of your request". It does not publish credits per request, so measure before you commit to a large pack.

For SMS, the credits per message depend on its length and the destination country. Bill scanning is simpler: one credit per document, whatever the number of pages, according to an Odoo forum answer on OCR credits.

What does Odoo AI cost per month?

For a typical 25-user distributor, scanning and enrichment cost a predictable amount, while AI chats and agents are the variable part. The example below is illustrative; your volumes and usage will differ.

Two things make this budget work. Measure AI credits for the first month before buying a big pack, and keep scheduled agents to the jobs that pay for themselves.

Odoo Online vs Odoo.sh vs on-premise: what changes for AI?

In Odoo 20, AI is billed the same way on every hosting type: through Odoo AI credits. The difference from Odoo 19 is biggest for Odoo.sh and on-premise users.

In Odoo 19, Odoo's AI API keys page says API keys "are required for Odoo.sh or On-premise databases to use AI features". In Odoo 20, that page is marked as under construction and points to the Odoo AI credits service.

Can you still use your own OpenAI or Gemini key?

Not inside Odoo 20's built-in AI features, but you can still bring your own AI in three other ways. Each one moves the cost to your own AI account.

• MCP: Odoo 20 includes an MCP server, so an outside AI tool can read Odoo data and use approved tools.
• Custom integration: a custom module calls your chosen model for a specific job, such as classifying tickets or writing quotes.
• App Store modules: third-party modules connect OpenAI or other providers, but check that each one supports Odoo 20.

Is Odoo AI available in Community?

No, Odoo's built-in AI app and its Odoo 20 features are Enterprise only. Every AI change in the Odoo 20 release notes carries that label.

Community users who want AI usually connect an outside model through a custom module or a third-party app. That works, but you maintain the integration yourself and pay the AI provider directly.

How do you control and monitor AI credit spend?

Set alerts, decide who can use AI, and review usage monthly before refilling. These steps keep AI spend predictable.

1. Set an alert: in each IAP account, set the email alert threshold and the people who receive it.
2. Decide on auto-refill: turn it on for scanning, where volume is steady, and leave it off for AI until usage settles.
3. Limit agent triggers: review every scheduled or automated agent run and switch off the ones nobody reads.
4. Watch linked services: when contact enrichment credits run out, new vendors from scanned bills are created "with only the name and the VAT number".
5. Review monthly: compare credits spent with the time saved, then choose the next pack size.

What happens to your AI setup when you upgrade from Odoo 19?

If you used your own OpenAI or Gemini key in Odoo 19, you will need Odoo AI credits after upgrading to Odoo 20. The key settings are removed, and the model is chosen by Odoo.

Custom code that called the old AI provider services must be rewritten, and the AI app module was renamed. Plan both in your upgrade scope; our Odoo upgrade services include them.
