Odoo vs SAP: Business One, S/4HANA, 5-Year TCO and the ECC Deadline cover

Most "Odoo vs SAP" articles compare Odoo with one SAP logo. In practice you are choosing between Business One, S/4HANA or staying on ECC. Our side-by-side Odoo vs SAP Business One comparison covers the criteria; this guide adds the size fit, five-year cost and ECC deadline.

This guide is for CFOs, IT heads and owners who run SAP today or have SAP on a shortlist. If you are still building that shortlist, our ERP comparison hub puts Odoo next to NetSuite, Zoho and ERPNext.

Which SAP product are you comparing with Odoo?

Most buyers comparing Odoo with SAP are really choosing between SAP Business One, an S/4HANA edition, or a move off ECC. Each one competes with Odoo in a different way.

SAP productWho SAP aims it atHow it compares with Odoo
SAP Business OneSmall and midsize businesses, sold through partnersClosest match to Odoo for SMEs
S/4HANA Cloud, public edition (GROW with SAP)Growing companies wanting standard cloud ERPCompetes with Odoo Online for midsize firms
S/4HANA Cloud, private edition (RISE with SAP)Large firms moving from ECC with custom processesCompetes with Odoo only at the upper midsize end
SAP ECC (Business Suite 7)Existing SAP customers on the legacy suiteThe system you are leaving, not a choice

SAP's own Business One product page says it "is designed for small and midsize businesses (SMB)", while S/4HANA Cloud is positioned for organizations of all sizes. That split matters more than any feature list.

How do Odoo and SAP compare at a glance?

Odoo vs SAP: Which ERP fits your company size?

Odoo is one modular ERP with published prices and open code, while SAP is a family of ERPs priced per deal and delivered mainly through partners. The table sums up the points buyers ask about most.

Odoo vs SAP Business One: which fits small and midsize firms?

For most small and midsize firms, Odoo and SAP Business One both fit, and the decision comes down to scope, cost model and how much you want to change the system yourself. Both are proven SME ERPs.

Business One is strong on core finance, purchasing and stock, and has a long partner network. Odoo covers the same core and adds CRM, website, eCommerce, HR, field service and helpdesk in the same database, so fewer add-ons are needed.

There is also a version clock on Business One. SAP's Business One maintenance page lists release 10.0 "in mainstream maintenance until December 31, 2026", with dates subject to change. Many B1 users face an upgrade decision now.

  • Choose Business One when: your accountant and partner know it well, your processes are mostly finance and stock, and you value SAP's brand with banks or a parent company.
  • Choose Odoo when: you want CRM, eCommerce and operations in one system, published pricing, and freedom to change partners or host the system yourself.
  • Check both for: your local tax rules, your three most important reports, and the cost of add-ons you would need on each side.

Odoo vs SAP S/4HANA: where does Odoo stop fitting?

Odoo stops being the natural fit when a group needs S/4HANA scale: many legal entities across regions, very high transaction volumes, deep regulatory controls, or a large in-house SAP team. Below that line, S/4HANA is often more system than the business needs.

SAP says GROW with SAP helps teams "go live in weeks instead of months" with preconfigured workflows. That is a real option for midsize firms that want standard SAP processes in the public cloud and accept SAP's release pace.

Odoo handles several companies in one database, with intercompany rules and shared or separate data per company, as Odoo's multi-company documentation shows. For most groups of a few entities, that is enough.

Where we would point a client to S/4HANA instead: dozens of entities with statutory consolidation, complex discrete manufacturing across many plants tied to MES, or a parent company that mandates SAP. In those cases, the honest answer is SAP.

What does the SAP ECC end of maintenance mean for you?

SAP ECC end of maintenance means your current SAP system stops receiving standard mainstream support at the end of 2027, so you must pick a path: S/4HANA, extended maintenance, or a move to another ERP. The dates below come straight from SAP.

DateWhat happensSource
End of 2027Mainstream maintenance ends for Business Suite 7 (ECC) coreSAP, February 2020
2028 to 2030Optional extended maintenance, premium of two percentage pointsSAP, February 2020
After 2027, no extensionAutomatic move to customer-specific maintenanceSAP, February 2020
Before end of 2030Move to SAP ERP, private edition to keep the transition option openSAP, August 2025
2031 to 2033Transition option for large systems, subscriptions may run to 2035 with prerequisitesSAP, updated October 2026
End of 2040SAP maintenance commitment for S/4HANASAP, February 2020

SAP set out the 2027, 2030 and 2040 dates in its 2020 maintenance announcement. Customers who stay on Business Suite 7 after 2027 without extended maintenance "will automatically be transferred to the customer-specific maintenance model."

The later transition option is not for everyone. SAP's transition option update lists SAP HANA only, a minimum system size of 2 TB, the max success plan, and a standard 20 percent uplift for customers signing in 2026.

For a midsize ECC customer, that leaves three practical paths:

  1. Pay for extended maintenance to the end of 2030 and use the time to plan, knowing the premium buys time, not progress.
  2. Move to S/4HANA, either a new implementation in the public cloud or a conversion in the private cloud, and budget for a full project.
  3. Move to another ERP such as Odoo, carrying master data, open items and selected history, and redesigning processes on a simpler platform.

Should SAP ECC users move to S/4HANA or to Odoo?

SAP ECC users should move to S/4HANA when SAP is woven into how the group runs, and consider Odoo when the ECC system serves a single business or a few entities that have outgrown the cost. The project is large either way, so the comparison should be fair.

An S/4HANA move keeps your SAP skills, partners and data model. An Odoo move resets them. That reset is the point for companies whose ECC system was sized for a bigger past, a former parent, or processes that no longer exist.

Signs Odoo deserves a serious look:

  • Size: your system is well below the transition option's 2 TB minimum and your user count is in the tens or low hundreds.
  • Cost: maintenance, hosting and SAP skills cost more each year than the value of the custom code you would keep.
  • Scope: you need CRM, eCommerce or field service that ECC never covered.
  • Team: your in-house SAP know-how has retired or left, and partners are expensive to retain.

Odoo also has a version clock. Each major Odoo version gets three years of standard support, and Odoo 20 was released in September 2026, so plan an upgrade every few years. Our Odoo 20 release notes show what changed.

What does a 5-year TCO look like for Odoo vs SAP?

A fair five-year TCO adds licenses, implementation, migration, hosting, support and upgrades on both sides, not just year-one licenses. Odoo publishes most of these numbers; SAP quotes them per deal.

Cost lineOdooSAP Business One or S/4HANA
LicensesPublished per user per monthQuoted by SAP or partner

Support and upgradesPartner support; upgrade every few yearsAnnual maintenance or subscription
Renewal increasesUp to 7% a year per Odoo's agreementPer contract

On the Odoo pricing page, US prices billed yearly are US$31.10 per user a month for Standard and US$61.00 for Custom, with first-year prices of US$24.90 and US$49.00. In India they are Rs 725 and Rs 1,350. Light Users cost US$8.90, and one app is free.

Illustrative example, 50 users on Odoo Custom: about US$29,400 in year one and US$36,600 a year after that, so roughly US$175,800 in licenses over five years before renewal increases. Add midsize implementation of $9k to $27k and migration of $1.2k to $9k.

Illustrative example, 20 users on Odoo Standard: about US$35,800 in licenses over five years, plus small-project implementation of $3k to $9k. Neither example includes Odoo.sh hosting or ongoing support, so add those if you need them.

Ask your SAP partner to fill in the same table for the same users and scope. Our guide to Odoo pricing and the costs beyond licenses lists what to include.

How does an SAP to Odoo migration work?

An SAP to Odoo migration moves master data, open items and opening balances first, then selected history, and redesigns processes rather than copying SAP transactions. Plan it as a new implementation with a tested data move.

  1. Freeze scope: list the SAP processes, reports and custom code in use, and retire what nobody needs.
  2. Map data: customers, vendors, products, bills of materials, charts of accounts and open documents, with an owner for each object.
  3. Load and test: use Odoo's import tools with external IDs, in batches, and reconcile balances after every test load.
  4. Decide on history: bring opening balances and open items, and keep closed years in an archive or reporting copy.
  5. Rehearse cutover: run at least two dress rehearsals, train key users, then switch with a short parallel period.

Full history is where projects slip. On the Odoo forum, a long-time Odoo expert called importing full transaction history "VERY VERY VERY time consuming, needs scripts, very advanced knowledge required". Most companies do not need it.

Our Odoo migration services cover the SAP export, mapping, test loads, reconciliation and cutover.

Which is better for your industry, Odoo or SAP?

Odoo fits most SME manufacturers, distributors, retailers and service firms, while SAP keeps an edge in very large, multi-plant or heavily regulated operations. The table shows where each one usually lands.

How do you decide between Odoo and SAP?

Weighing SAP? Price Odoo first

Answer six questions honestly and the choice is usually clear. If most answers point to Odoo, get an Odoo estimate; if most point to SAP, scope S/4HANA or Business One properly.

  1. Size: how many legal entities, users and transactions will you run in five years?
  2. SAP footprint: is SAP mandated by a parent, a customer or a regulator?
  3. Scope: do you need CRM, eCommerce or field service in the same system?
  4. Change: how much custom code do you own today, and how much is still used?
  5. Cost: what is your five-year total on both sides, with the same scope?
  6. Clock: are you on ECC or Business One 10.0, and when does your support end?

Odoo vs SAP case study: Indep Consulting SPRL

A Belgian cleaning-chemicals company with intercompany stock flows and EDI needs moved to one Odoo system, the kind of scope many firms assume needs SAP. Indep Consulting sells chemicals, equipment and maintenance contracts.

Sales, stock and accounting sat in disconnected tools. Customer-specific pricing and intercompany goods movements were handled by hand, maintenance contracts and claims had no systematic tracking, and trading partners expected EDI.

We implemented Sales, CRM, Inventory, Accounting and eCommerce in Odoo, with custom pricelists, intercompany transfer rules, EDI and claim management. We also wrote eight SQL-based management reports, from product margin to stock rotation.

The 12-week project gave the company one system spanning webshop, warehouse and accounting, and a management reporting cycle twice as fast. Read the Indep Consulting Odoo ERP case study.

The bottom line on Odoo vs SAP

Choose SAP when your group needs S/4HANA scale or SAP is mandated; choose Odoo when you are a small or midsize business that wants one modern ERP at a published price. For ECC users, the 2027 date makes this a decision for now, not later.

Name the SAP product you are comparing, price five years on both sides with the same scope, and work back from your maintenance end date. If your ECC or Business One system serves a business that Odoo can run, the move often pays for itself.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Odoo better than SAP?

+

Neither is better for everyone. Odoo suits small and midsize firms that want one ERP at a published price. SAP suits large groups that need S/4HANA scale or must run SAP for a parent, customer or regulator.

When does SAP ECC support end?

+

SAP mainstream maintenance for ECC core applications ends at the end of 2027. Optional extended maintenance runs to the end of 2030 at a premium of two percentage points, and a transition option exists for large systems from 2031.

Is Odoo a good alternative to SAP Business One?

+

Yes, for most small and midsize firms. Odoo covers accounting, purchasing, inventory and sales like Business One, and adds manufacturing, eCommerce and HR in the same database. Check local tax rules and key reports before you decide.

How much does SAP Business One cost compared with Odoo?

+

SAP publishes no Business One price list, so you need a partner quote. Odoo lists US$31.10 Standard and US$61.00 Custom per user a month billed yearly in the US. Compare five-year totals with the same scope.

Can you migrate from SAP to Odoo?

+

Yes. Master data, open items and opening balances move with Odoo's import tools and tested scripts, while closed years usually stay in an archive. Plan it as a new implementation with at least two cutover rehearsals.

How long does an SAP to Odoo migration take?

+

It depends on size and scope. Our published Odoo ranges are 4 to 8 weeks for small projects, 8 to 14 weeks for midsize and 12 to 24 weeks for large ones, with data migration planned inside that time.

Is Odoo suitable for large enterprises?

+

Odoo runs several companies in one database and serves many upper midsize firms. Very large groups with dozens of entities, complex consolidation or many plants tied to MES are usually better served by S/4HANA.

What is the difference between SAP Business One and S/4HANA?

+

SAP says Business One is designed for small and midsize businesses and is sold through partners. S/4HANA is SAP's enterprise ERP for organizations of all sizes, sold through RISE with SAP or GROW with SAP.
