SAP to Odoo Migration for Manufacturers: Reasons, Cost and Path cover

An SAP to Odoo migration in a factory is mostly a data and process project: materials, bills of materials, routings and open production orders. Our Odoo migration services cover the extraction, mapping, test loads and cutover from SAP.

This guide is for plant managers, CFOs and IT heads running SAP ECC or Business One in production. For the product comparison and five-year cost model, read our Odoo vs SAP guide to Business One, S/4HANA and the ECC deadline.

Why do manufacturers move from SAP to Odoo?

Manufacturers move from SAP to Odoo because a midsize plant rarely needs SAP's scale, but still pays for it in licences, support and specialist skills. The reasons we hear most come down to cost, speed and the shop floor.

  • Cost of ownership: annual maintenance, hosting and SAP consultants often cost more each year than the value of the custom code they protect.
  • Skills: in-house SAP know-how retires or leaves, and outside SAP partners are expensive to keep on call.
  • Shop-floor fit: operators want simple tablet screens for work orders, not transaction codes.
  • Scope gaps: ECC rarely covered CRM, eCommerce, field service or a customer portal, so plants added side tools.
  • The deadline: ECC mainstream maintenance ends at the end of 2027, so every ECC plant must choose a path now.

When you replace SAP with Odoo, sales, purchase, inventory, manufacturing, quality and accounting share one database. That removes many of the interfaces a plant built around SAP over the years.

Which SAP system are you leaving, and how much time do you have?

Your deadline depends on the SAP product you run, so confirm it before you plan the switch from SAP to Odoo. ECC customers have a hard date; Business One customers have a release clock.

SAP's maintenance announcement for Business Suite 7 says mainstream maintenance for core applications runs "until the end of 2027". Extended years to 2030 carry "a premium of two percentage points".

SAP systemYour clockWhat it means for a move to Odoo
SAP ECC (Business Suite 7)Mainstream maintenance ends end of 2027Plan the project in 2026 and 2027, or pay for extended years
ECC on extended maintenanceEnds at the close of 2030, at a premiumBuys time, not progress; use it to plan the exit
SAP Business OneEach release has its own maintenance end dateCheck your release; an upgrade is a natural switch point
SAP S/4HANASAP commits to maintenance to end of 2040No deadline pressure; move only for cost or fit

SAP describes SAP Business One as designed for small and midsize businesses. Those are the plants where Odoo is a like-for-like alternative.

What moves in an SAP to Odoo migration for manufacturers?

SAP to Odoo migration: What moves and what stays behind?

Master data, open documents, stock and opening balances move into Odoo; most closed history stays in a read-only archive. The table maps the SAP objects a plant cares about to their Odoo equivalents.

SAP objectOdoo equivalentMigrate or rebuild?
Material masterProducts and product variantsMigrate active items only
Bill of materialsOdoo bill of materialsMigrate, then test explode
Routings and work centersOperations on BoMs, work centersRebuild with real times and costs
Open production ordersManufacturing ordersClose in SAP or recreate open ones
Stock with batches and serialsStock by location, lot and serialMigrate counted quantities and values
Closed years of historyArchive or reporting copyKeep outside Odoo

Customers, vendors, price lists, open sales and purchase orders, open invoices and fixed assets move in the same way. Charts of accounts are usually rebuilt on Odoo's local tax package and mapped back to SAP accounts.

How do you migrate SAP bills of materials and routings to Odoo?

Migrate SAP bills of materials in the order Odoo needs them: products first, then components, then BoM lines that point to products by external ID. Getting that order and those IDs right is where most SAP data loads fail.

Odoo's docs describe a bill of materials as the blueprint of components and quantities for a product, often with operations and step-by-step guidance attached.

Real loads are large. One user on the Odoo forum had data extracted from SAP with over 10,000 products and 30,000 BoM entries. Duplicate names broke the links until the BoM lines used product variant IDs instead.

Odoo's import guide confirms you can reuse an external ID from previous software to ease the transition. Use the SAP material number as that ID, and import large files in smaller batches.

Routings need more thought. Odoo work centers carry capacity, time efficiency, an OEE target and a cost per hour. Rebuild them from how the floor runs today.

How do you handle open production orders, WIP and stock at cutover?

The cleanest cutover closes as many SAP production orders as possible, counts stock, and recreates only the orders still open in Odoo. Half-finished work is the hardest data in any manufacturing migration.

  1. Freeze date: pick a cutover date, ideally at a month or year end, and stop releasing new SAP production orders a few days before.
  2. Close what you can: finish, confirm and close orders that will complete before cutover.
  3. Recreate the rest: open the remaining orders in Odoo as new manufacturing orders, with components already consumed recorded.
  4. Count stock: run a physical count by location, lot and serial and load the counted quantities, not SAP's book figures.
  5. Load values: load stock values and agree them with finance against the SAP balance sheet.
  6. Run in parallel: run a short parallel period for finance only, then set SAP to read-only.

Decide valuation before go-live: Odoo supports Standard Price, FIFO and AVCO. Our guide to Odoo 20 inventory valuation changes explains how stock value reaches the ledger.

What is the SAP to Odoo migration path, step by step?

A safe SAP to Odoo migration path runs in six stages, from an honest inventory of what SAP really does to a rehearsed cutover. Each stage ends with a sign-off, so problems surface early.

  1. Inventory: list the SAP transactions, reports, custom programs, interfaces and active users in use today, and drop what nobody uses.
  2. Design on standard Odoo: map each plant process to standard Odoo first; justify every customization.
  3. Extract and clean: export materials, BoMs, routings, partners and open items, remove duplicates and dormant records.
  4. Test loads: load into a test database, reconcile balances, open items and stock, and let key users test with real orders.
  5. Integrations: connect banks, EDI, shop-floor devices, label printers and tax portals before the first live invoice.
  6. Cutover: rehearse at least twice, then load, go live and give the floor intensive support for the first weeks.

A discovery phase at the start turns step 1 and step 2 into a written scope and budget before you commit.

How much does an SAP to Odoo migration cost?

An SAP to Odoo migration for a manufacturer costs the Odoo implementation plus data migration plus licences, and most plants land in our midsize or large range. These are our published Odoo implementation cost ranges, not quotes.

Cost lineTypical rangeWhat drives it
Implementation, midsize$9k to $27k, 8 to 14 weeksPlants, processes, number of users
Implementation, large$27k to $150k+, 12 to 24 weeksMulti-plant, complex routings, integrations
Data migration$1.2k to $9kSource system, objects and years of history
Odoo Custom licences (US)US$61.00 per user a month billed yearlyUsers; multi-company and API need Custom
Odoo Standard licences (US)US$31.10 per user a month billed yearlySingle company, no Studio

SAP sources usually sit at the upper end of the data migration range, because materials, BoMs and batches are rich and need careful cleanup.

On the Odoo pricing page, first-year prices are US$24.90 for Standard and US$49.00 for Custom. In India, Standard is Rs 725 and Custom is Rs 1,350 per user a month billed yearly.

Illustrative example: a plant with 40 users on Odoo Custom pays about US$23,520 in year one and US$29,280 a year after that. A midsize project adds $9k to $27k, plus $1.2k to $9k for migration.

How long does it take to switch from SAP to Odoo?

Most single-plant moves from SAP to Odoo take 8 to 14 weeks, and multi-plant or heavily customized scopes take 12 to 24 weeks. Data cleanup and testing take longer than configuration.

Timelines stretch with years of custom programs, dirty material data or key users with no time to test. Our guide on how long Odoo implementation takes breaks the phases down by size.

For an ECC plant aiming to go live before the end of 2027, work back from that date. Leave room for two rehearsals and a quiet month for cutover.

What should you not copy from SAP into Odoo?

Do not rebuild SAP inside Odoo: copying old screens, custom programs and every year of history is the fastest way to a slow, costly project. Odoo works best close to its standard.

  • Custom ABAP logic: many programs exist to fill gaps Odoo covers as standard; rewrite only what still earns its keep.
  • Transaction-by-transaction history: bring opening balances and open items, and archive closed years for audit.
  • Every report: keep the ten reports people use weekly, and rebuild them in Odoo.
  • Old approvals: simplify approval chains that existed only because SAP made changes hard.

When a real gap remains, our Odoo customization services build it as a clean module that survives version upgrades. Odoo 20 is released, so build for it from day one.

Which manufacturers fit Odoo after SAP?

Discrete, process and make-to-order manufacturers with one to a few plants fit Odoo well after SAP. Groups with dozens of plants tied to complex MES and statutory consolidation are often better staying in the SAP family.

SAP to Odoo migration case study: Chetan Plastics

Chetan Plastics was not an SAP exit, but its project shows the manufacturing scope an Odoo move has to carry. The plastics-printing manufacturer in Ahmedabad moved five departments onto one customized Odoo system.

Sales, purchase, delivery and receipt records lived in a shared Excel file. Block-based print pricing was calculated by hand, and nothing linked a CRM job to its sales order, purchase order or delivery paperwork.

We connected six core modules from Sales to Repair and custom-built ten workflow areas. That included two-step validation on sales and purchase confirmations, the block calculator inside order lines, and 100x75mm barcode labels on a TSC printer.

The phased rollout took 16 weeks. Data now moves between Sales, Purchase, Manufacturing, Inventory and Accounting without re-entry. Read the Chetan Plastics Odoo manufacturing case study.

The bottom line on SAP to Odoo migration

For a single-plant or midsize manufacturer, an SAP to Odoo migration is a sound move when it is planned as a new implementation with clean data and a rehearsed cutover. For ECC plants, the 2027 date makes this a decision for now.

Start with what SAP really does for you today, keep history in an archive, rebuild routings from the floor, and count stock at cutover. Done that way, most plants run on Odoo within one or two quarters.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can Odoo replace SAP for a manufacturing company?

+

For most single-plant and midsize manufacturers, yes. Odoo covers bills of materials, work orders, work centers, quality, maintenance and lot or serial tracking in one database. Very large groups with many plants may still be better on SAP.

Why are companies leaving SAP?

+

The usual reasons are licence and support cost, scarce SAP skills, rigid screens and the end of ECC mainstream maintenance in 2027. Many midsize firms find they pay for scale they do not use.

What data can you migrate from SAP to Odoo?

+

Materials, bills of materials, customers, vendors, price lists, open orders, open invoices, stock by lot or serial, fixed assets and opening balances. Closed history usually stays in an archive.

Can you move SAP Business One to Odoo?

+

Yes. Business One exports master data and open items that load into Odoo with its import tools and external IDs. A Business One release upgrade is often a good moment to switch.

What happens to open production orders during the switch?

+

Close as many as you can in SAP before cutover. Recreate the rest in Odoo as new manufacturing orders, recording components already consumed, and load stock from a physical count.

How much does it cost to replace SAP with Odoo?

+

By our published ranges, midsize projects cost $9k to $27k and large ones $27k to $150k+, plus $1.2k to $9k for data migration and Odoo licences per user. These are ranges, not quotes.

Do we need to keep SAP after moving to Odoo?

+

Keep SAP or an export read-only for audits and history for as long as your local record-keeping rules require. Most firms stop all live work in SAP within weeks of go-live.

Which Odoo version should we migrate to from SAP?

+

Odoo 20 is released, so a new implementation should normally start on Odoo 20. Building on the latest version gives you the longest support window before your next upgrade.
