How Long Does Odoo Implementation Take? Timelines by Size and Scope cover

Most answers to "how long does Odoo implementation take" stop at "it depends". This guide gives real week ranges, phase lengths and the drivers that stretch them, drawn from the projects behind our Odoo implementation services.

It is written for owners, CFOs and operations leads who need a go-live date they can plan around. For the full rollout playbook, strategy and partner choice, read our pillar Odoo ERP implementation guide.

How long does an Odoo implementation take by company size?

Odoo Implementation Timeline: How long will your rollout take?

An Odoo implementation takes 4 to 24 weeks for most companies, and company size and scope decide where you land. The table uses the ranges we publish on our Odoo implementation cost page.

Company profileUsersTypical scopeOdoo implementation timelineImplementation cost (our range)
Small business5 to 253 to 5 apps, one company, standard tax4 to 8 weeks$3k to $9k
Mid-size company25 to 1006 to 10 apps, multi-warehouse, 2 to 3 integrations8 to 14 weeks$9k to $27k
Large or multi-entity100+Full suite, several companies, heavy MRP or finance12 to 24 weeks$27k to $150k+

These Odoo implementation duration ranges are estimates, not promises. Odoo licenses are billed separately by Odoo: on the Odoo pricing page, US Standard is $31.10 and Custom is $61.00 per user a month billed yearly.

Our own projects sit inside these bands. KMF Technologies went live on four apps in 8 weeks, Indep Consulting took 12 weeks across ten business areas, and Chetan Plastics took 16 weeks with heavy manufacturing customization.

How long does each Odoo implementation phase take?

Each Odoo implementation phase has a typical length, and testing and data work are the phases most often squeezed. The table shows an illustrative 12-week plan for a mid-size company with one entity and two integrations.

PhaseIllustrative length (12-week project)What must be finished
Discovery and scope1 to 2 weeksSigned scope, process maps, phase-two list
Solution design1 weekModule list, configuration decisions, gap list
Configuration and build3 to 4 weeksConfigured apps, custom work, integrations
Data migration2 to 3 weeks, overlapping buildTwo test loads, validated balances
Testing (UAT)2 weeksKey users sign off real scenarios
Training1 weekRole-based sessions close to go-live
Go-live and hypercareCutover weekend, then 2 to 4 weeksStable daily use, first month-end closed

The phases overlap, so the total is shorter than the sum. Our Odoo implementation checklist lists the tasks inside each phase.

A realistic sequence for the first 12 weeks looks like this:

  1. Weeks 1 to 2: discovery workshops, scope sign-off and a frozen phase-one list.
  2. Week 3: design decisions on chart of accounts, warehouses, pricing and approvals.
  3. Weeks 4 to 7: configuration, custom work and integrations, with key users seeing the system weekly.
  4. Weeks 5 to 8: two trial data loads, with balances checked against the old system.
  5. Weeks 9 to 10: user acceptance testing on real orders, returns, credit notes and stock moves.
  6. Week 11: training by role, then a final data load.
  7. Week 12: cutover and go-live, followed by hypercare through the first month-end.

What makes an Odoo implementation take longer?

Odoo implementations run long because of decisions, data and custom work, not because Odoo is slow to configure. These are the drivers we see push a go-live date back most often.

  • Slow decisions: every department needs one person who can say yes. A week of waiting on a pricing rule is a week lost.
  • Scope creep: new requests during build reset design and testing. Park them on a phase-two list.
  • Dirty data: duplicate customers, inconsistent product codes and wrong units of measure take weeks to clean.
  • Custom modules: each one adds build, testing and upgrade work; configure first and customize only for real gaps.
  • Integrations: eCommerce, marketplaces, payment and shipping links each need their own test cycle.
  • Several companies or countries: each entity adds tax setup, intercompany rules and its own testing.
  • Key users stuck in the day job: if testers cannot spare time, UAT stretches by weeks.

Our cost page shows how each driver moves the budget too: custom modules run $1.8k to $9k each and integrations $1.2k to $6k each. Time and cost usually rise together.

How long does Odoo data migration take?

Odoo data migration usually takes 2 to 4 weeks of elapsed time inside the project, and it runs alongside the build rather than after it. Source system, data quality and years of history set the length.

Clean master data from one system moves fastest. Data spread across spreadsheets, an old accounting package and email takes longer, because someone has to decide which record is right. We price migration at $1.2k to $9k for the same reasons.

Odoo's import and export documentation offers import templates and a Test button that checks a file before loading. It also advises importing very large files in smaller batches, which adds load time on big catalogs.

To keep migration short:

  • Migrate open items only: customers, vendors, products, open orders, open invoices and stock on hand.
  • Bring balances, not history: load opening balances and keep closed years in the old system as a read-only archive.
  • Run two trial loads: the first finds the problems, the second proves the fixes.
  • Name a data owner per object: one person signs off customers, another signs off products.

For legacy systems with long histories, our Odoo migration services plan the extract, mapping and validation as a separate workstream.

Does Odoo 19 or Odoo 20 change the implementation timeline?

Choosing Odoo 20 for a new project does not lengthen the timeline, and it saves you an upgrade project later. Odoo 20 was released in September 2026 and Odoo plans standard support for it until September 2029.

Odoo's supported versions table lists Odoo 19 support to September 2028 (planned). Starting on 19 today gives you one less year before an upgrade, so we start new databases on Odoo 20 unless a required third-party module is not ready.

That module check belongs in discovery. If a connector or localization app you depend on has no Odoo 20 version yet, the wait or the rebuild becomes part of your timeline. Our Odoo 20 release notes list what changed app by app.

Two Odoo 20 changes affect planning. AI features now run on Odoo AI IAP credits instead of your own OpenAI or Gemini keys, and XML-RPC and JSON-RPC are deprecated, with removal scheduled for Odoo 22. Build new integrations on the newer API from day one.

Does Odoo Online, Odoo.sh or on-premise change go-live time?

Hosting changes setup effort by days, not months, but it decides how much custom code you can use. The bigger timeline effect is what each option allows.

HostingSetup effortCustom modulesTimeline effect
Odoo OnlineFastest, no serversNot supportedShortest path for standard processes
Odoo.shShort, Odoo-managed platformSupported, Custom planAdds code review and staging cycles
On-premiseLongest, your own serversSupported, Custom planAdds server, backup and security setup

Odoo's documentation states that Odoo Online is incompatible with custom modules. If your scope needs custom code, plan for Odoo.sh or on-premise from the start, or you will rebuild mid-project.

Can you implement Odoo faster without risking go-live?

You can shorten an Odoo implementation by cutting scope, never by cutting testing, data checks or training. Those steps only move problems to the week after go-live.

Odoo's own Success Packs range from 4 to 200 consultant hours and advise contacting Odoo for an in-depth analysis above 50 users. The page claims a 98% implementation success rate with a pack, against 65% for self-implementation.

Safe ways to go faster:

  • Phase the rollout: go live on accounting, sales and inventory first, then add manufacturing, HR or eCommerce.
  • Use standard flows: adapt small processes to Odoo instead of coding around them.
  • Decide fast: hold a weekly decision meeting with owners who can approve on the spot.
  • Prepare data early: start cleaning customers and products in week one, not week six.

Before you sign, compare plans on realistic phase lengths. Our guide on how to compare Odoo implementation proposals shows how to spot a timeline that skips testing.

Odoo implementation timeline by industry

Industry changes the timeline through its hardest process: production for manufacturers, channels for retailers and billing rules for services firms. The table shows where time usually goes.

IndustryPain or cost driverOdoo approachHow iVentureTeam helps
ManufacturingBills of materials, routings, quality checksMRP, Quality, Maintenance in one databaseMap production first, test real work orders
Wholesale and distributionMulti-warehouse stock, landed costsInventory routes, barcode, purchase rulesDesign routes, run trial stock counts

Manufacturers usually sit at the top of each band because routings and costing need careful testing. Our page on Odoo ERP for manufacturing explains that setup.

Warning signs your Odoo implementation timeline is slipping

A slipping Odoo timeline shows early, usually in week three or four, long before the go-live date moves. Watch for these signals.

  • No signed scope after the second week of discovery.
  • Key users missing from weekly demos or testing sessions.
  • The first trial data load keeps getting pushed back.
  • Custom requests grow every week while the phase-two list stays empty.
  • Testing is planned for less than a week on a mid-size project.
  • Training is booked months before go-live, so people forget it.

If two or more apply, pause and reset the plan. A short replan costs far less than a failed go-live.

How to set a realistic Odoo go-live date

Set your Odoo go-live date by planning back from a calm business period, then adding buffer for testing and hypercare. A date picked for convenience rarely survives contact with your data.

  1. Pick the anchor: a month or quarter start keeps accounting clean, and a fiscal-year start is cleanest.
  2. Avoid peak season: never cut over during your busiest sales month or a stock count.
  3. Count back: use the phase lengths above for your size, then add two weeks of buffer.
  4. Book people early: reserve key-user time for testing and training now.
  5. Plan hypercare: keep fast support for 2 to 4 weeks, through the first month-end close.

Odoo implementation timeline case study: Indep Consulting

A Belgian cleaning-chemicals company went from disconnected tools to one Odoo system in a 12-week delivery. It shows a mid-size scope landing inside the 8 to 14 week band.

Indep Consulting sells cleaning chemicals and equipment and runs maintenance contracts. Sales, stock and accounting sat in separate tools, customer pricing and intercompany moves were manual, and trading partners expected EDI.

We rolled out Sales, CRM, Inventory and Accounting as the core, built the website theme and eCommerce, set up claim management, custom pricelists, intercompany transfer rules and EDI, and wrote eight SQL management reports.

The project covered 10+ business areas and doubled the speed of the management reporting cycle. Read the Indep Consulting Odoo ERP and SQL reporting case study.

The bottom line on how long Odoo implementation takes

Plan on 4 to 8 weeks for a small business, 8 to 14 for a mid-size company and 12 to 24 for a large or multi-entity group. Your scope, data and decision speed decide where in that band you land.

Cut scope rather than testing, start data work in week one, choose Odoo 20 for new projects and keep hypercare through the first month-end. Do that and the go-live date becomes a plan, not a guess.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does an Odoo implementation take?

+

Most take 4 to 8 weeks for small businesses, 8 to 14 weeks for mid-size companies and 12 to 24 weeks for large or multi-entity groups. Scope, data quality and decision speed decide where you land.

Can Odoo be implemented in one month?

+

Yes, for a small company using three to five standard apps with clean data and fast decisions. Add custom modules, integrations or several companies and a month becomes unrealistic.

What are the phases of an Odoo implementation?

+

Discovery, solution design, configuration and build, data migration, testing, training, go-live and hypercare. Data migration overlaps the build, so the total is shorter than the sum of phases.

How long does Odoo data migration take?

+

Usually 2 to 4 weeks of elapsed time inside the project. Moving open items and opening balances is fast; years of history, messy spreadsheets and several source systems add time.

What delays an Odoo go-live most often?

+

Slow decisions, scope creep, dirty data and custom code. Key users who cannot spare time for testing are another common cause, so book their time at the start.

Should a new implementation use Odoo 19 or Odoo 20?

+

Start on Odoo 20 unless a module you rely on is not ready for it. Odoo plans support for Odoo 20 to September 2029, a year longer than Odoo 19.

How long is hypercare after Odoo go-live?

+

Plan 2 to 4 weeks of fast support, and run it through your first month-end close. That is when most accounting and stock questions appear.

Does Odoo Online go live faster than Odoo.sh?

+

Setup is faster on Odoo Online, but it does not support custom modules. If your scope needs custom code, choose Odoo.sh or on-premise from day one.

How much does a typical Odoo implementation cost?

+

Our published ranges are $3k to $9k for small, $9k to $27k for mid-size and $27k to $150k+ for large projects, with Odoo licenses billed separately.
