Odoo 20 vs ERPNext: Comparison From a Team That Implements Both
Odoo 20 vs ERPNext 16 compared by a team that implements both: license, 25-user cost, modules, India GST, customization, upgrades, AI and when each wins.
Most Odoo vs ERPNext articles come from a partner that sells only one. We deliver both, and our Odoo implementation services start with a fit check that can end with ERPNext.
This guide is for owners, CFOs and IT leads choosing an open-source ERP in late 2026. It focuses on what Odoo 20 and ERPNext version 16 change. For our general criterion-by-criterion view, see the ERPNext vs Odoo comparison.
What changed in the Odoo 20 vs ERPNext decision in 2026?
Both products shipped a new major version in 2026, so older comparisons no longer describe what you would buy today. ERPNext 16 arrived in January and Odoo 20 in September.
Frappe released ERPNext and Frappe HR version 16 on 12 January 2026, led by a new desktop UI and "up to 2x faster performance". Minor releases land on GitHub most weeks.
Odoo 20 was released at Odoo Experience in September 2026. Our Odoo 20 release notes explain 585 changes across 52 apps, including split manufacturing orders, multi-ledger consolidation, POS self-ordering and AI agents that create and update records.
Two Odoo 20 changes matter here. AI now runs on paid IAP credits instead of your own OpenAI or Gemini key, and XML-RPC and JSON-RPC are deprecated, with removal scheduled for Odoo 22.
How do Odoo 20 and ERPNext compare at a glance?

Odoo 20 is a broader, more polished suite with a paid Enterprise layer, while ERPNext is a fully open-source ERP whose main cost is people and hosting. The table sums up what buyers ask us most.
| Factor | Odoo 20 | ERPNext 16 |
|---|---|---|
| License | Community LGPLv3; Enterprise paid per user | GPLv3, every feature free |
| Current version | 20.0, September 2026 | 16.x, January 2026 |
| Support window | Standard support to September 2029 | Planned to end of 2029 |
| Hosting | Odoo Online, Odoo.sh or your servers | Frappe Cloud or your servers |
| No-code changes | Studio, Enterprise Custom plan only | Customize Form and custom fields, free |
| Built-in AI | AI agents on IAP credits (EUR 1 per credit) | Added through custom or third-party apps |
| India GST | Odoo India localization | India Compliance app |
| Best fit | Product, retail and multi-channel firms | Cost-led firms, non-profits, education |
Odoo 20 vs ERPNext license: what does open source mean for each?
ERPNext is open source end to end, while Odoo splits into a free Community edition and a paid Enterprise edition. That split drives most of the cost gap.
The ERPNext license is GPLv3: the ERPNext source on GitHub is open, and every module ships in the free product. You pay for hosting, support and the people who set it up. Frappe HR and the India Compliance app are also GPLv3.
Odoo Community is LGPLv3 and free to run on your own servers. Our Odoo Community vs Enterprise guide explains what Enterprise adds: Studio, the mobile apps, AI, Odoo's cloud hosting and official support.
Full accounting, Payroll, PLM, Quality and Shop Floor are also missing from the Community 20.0 source code. That is why we often price Odoo Community next to ERPNext: both remove the license line, but ERPNext gives you more of the finished ERP for free.
What does a 25-user Odoo 20 vs ERPNext setup cost?
At list price, Odoo 20 Standard for 25 users costs about US$44,790 in licenses over five years, while ERPNext costs only hosting. The table is an illustrative scenario, not a quote.
| Illustrative 25-user scenario (US list prices, October 2026) | Year 1 | Each year after | 5-year license total | Hosting |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Odoo 20 Standard | US$7,470 | US$9,330 | US$44,790 | Included on Odoo Online |
| Odoo 20 Custom | US$14,700 | US$18,300 | US$87,900 | Odoo Online included; Odoo.sh or own servers extra |
| Odoo 20 Community | US$0 | US$0 | US$0 | Your own servers |
| ERPNext on Frappe Cloud | US$0 | US$0 | US$0 | About US$300 to US$600 a year |
The Odoo rows use the Odoo pricing page: US$24.90 first year then US$31.10 for Standard, and US$49.00 then US$61.00 for Custom, per user a month billed yearly. In India the same 25 users cost Rs 2,17,500 a year on Standard and Rs 4,05,000 on Custom.
Frappe Cloud site plans run from US$5 to US$50 a month (Rs 410 to Rs 4,100) and are priced on compute, not users. Custom apps need a private bench, which starts on the US$25 plan. Dedicated servers start at US$40 a month.
Licenses are only part of the bill. Odoo renewals can rise up to 7% a year, and Light Users, for limited-access staff, cost US$8.90 a month. Our Odoo pricing guide covers those rules.
Implementation usually costs more than five years of hosting on either side. Our published Odoo ranges run from US$3k to US$9k for small projects and US$9k to US$27k for mid-size ones. ERPNext effort follows the same drivers: processes, data and custom apps.
How do Odoo 20 and ERPNext modules compare in depth?
Both cover the core ERP, but Odoo 20 goes deeper in manufacturing extras, POS, eCommerce and marketing, while ERPNext covers more for free. This is how the main areas compare in our projects.
| Area | Odoo 20 | ERPNext 16 |
|---|---|---|
| Manufacturing | MRP, work orders, split MOs, MO cost; PLM, Quality and Shop Floor in Enterprise | BOMs, work orders, job cards, subcontracting, capacity planning |
| Accounting | Full accounting in Enterprise; multi-ledger consolidation, intercompany PO matching | Full accounting free; multi-company, accounting dimensions |
| HR and payroll | Payroll in Enterprise; new pay run workflow, net-to-gross simulation | Frappe HR app: leave, expenses, payroll and tax, free |
| POS | Self-ordering, multi-currency, delivery app links | Built-in POS for retail counters |
| eCommerce | Website and eCommerce in the same database | Separate Frappe Webshop app |
| CRM | Odoo CRM tied to quotes, stock and invoices | CRM module, plus the separate Frappe CRM app |
Manufacturing is where we see the most debate. ERPNext handles BOMs, job cards and subcontracting well. Odoo 20 adds continuous production, component replacement and backorder planning, and our Odoo ERP for manufacturing page shows the Shop Floor side.
Retail and eCommerce lean toward Odoo: POS, website, stock and accounting share one database. ERPNext's POS suits counters, but a strong web store needs extra work.
HR is ERPNext's quiet advantage. Frappe HR includes payroll and taxation at no license cost, while Odoo Payroll needs Enterprise and a payroll localization for your country.
Which handles India GST and other localizations better, Odoo 20 or ERPNext?
For India GST, both are complete, so compliance rarely decides the choice; outside India, Odoo's official localization list is wider. Check your own country before you shortlist.
The Odoo 20 India localization covers e-invoices and e-way bills through the NIC portals, TDS and TCS, GSTR-1 submission and GSTR-2B retrieval for matching. It connects through a GST Suvidha Provider configured in Accounting settings.
ERPNext moved Indian tax features into the India Compliance app. It files GSTR-1, supports the Invoice Management System, reconciles purchases against GSTR-2A and 2B, and integrates e-invoices and e-way bills. GST API features need a paid India Compliance account.
Outside India, Odoo 20's documentation covers 46 fiscal localizations. ERPNext relies more on community regional apps, so we confirm the app is maintained before we recommend it.
Frappe doctypes vs Odoo Studio: how does customization differ?
ERPNext lets you add fields, forms, scripts and whole new doctypes from the browser at no extra cost, while Odoo puts no-code changes in Studio on the paid Custom plan. Deeper changes are Python code on both.
In Frappe, almost everything is a doctype. Custom Field, Customize Form, Client Script and Server Script let a trained admin change forms and logic without a deployment. Bigger features go into a custom Frappe app.
In Odoo 20, Studio handles fields, views, automation rules and now a report editor with report translations. Anything beyond that is a Python module. Odoo Online does not accept custom modules, so code means Odoo.sh or your own servers.
Our rule on both is configure first, script second, code last. Our guide to Odoo Studio vs custom development shows where that line falls.
How do upgrades and version support compare between Odoo 20 and ERPNext?
Odoo upgrades are bigger jumps but free and assisted for Enterprise customers, while ERPNext upgrades are smaller and frequent but yours to run unless Frappe Cloud runs them. Either way, custom code drives the cost.
Odoo supports each major version for three years. Odoo 20 has standard support to September 2029, and Odoo 18 ends in September 2027. Enterprise upgrades run on Odoo's upgrade service. Databases older than the three latest major versions pay a 25% legacy surcharge.
Frappe lists supported versions: version 15 to the end of 2027 and version 16 to the end of 2029, with version 14 ended in January 2026. Frappe Cloud schedules app updates for you, and Frappe's warranty support covers listed versions only.
As of mid-October 2026, Odoo's upgrade platform still listed 19.0 as the highest target, so existing databases wait for Odoo 20 upgrades. Plan your timing with our Odoo version support timeline.
How do hosting and the partner ecosystem compare?
Odoo has the larger partner network and app store, while ERPNext has a smaller, India-heavy partner base and simpler hosting. Both let you keep a full copy of your database.
- Odoo hosting: Odoo Online for standard apps, Odoo.sh for custom code with Odoo managing servers, or your own servers.
- ERPNext hosting: Frappe Cloud on AWS, Oracle or Hetzner, or self-hosting with Frappe's bench tooling or Docker.
- Apps: the Odoo Apps Store is large; Frappe Cloud lists 150+ apps for one-click install.
- Partners: Odoo has partners in far more countries; ERPNext partners are fewer, with a strong base in India.
- Hiring: Odoo developers are easier to find; Frappe developers are fewer, so we plan handover early.
Self-hosting either one means someone owns backups, monitoring and patches.
Odoo 20 AI vs ERPNext: what do you get and what does it cost?
Odoo 20 ships AI agents inside the product and bills them on IAP credits, while ERPNext has no comparable built-in agent layer, so AI comes from apps you add. Odoo is faster to start; ERPNext gives you free choice of model.
Odoo 20 AI agents can answer questions about files, create and update records and take voice input. Usage draws Odoo AI IAP credits at EUR 1 per credit, with 20 free. The own-key setting from Odoo 19 is gone.
ERPNext 16's release focused on UI, speed and security. Teams add AI through custom Frappe apps or the REST API, using their own model keys and paying the model vendor directly.
Our breakdown of Odoo 20 AI features and IAP credit costs shows typical monthly usage.
Which industries suit Odoo 20 or ERPNext?
ERPNext suits non-profits, education and cost-led service and trading firms, while Odoo 20 suits manufacturers, retailers and multi-channel sellers. The table shows where each one usually lands in our work.

| Retail and eCommerce | POS, web store and stock in sync | Odoo 20 | Connect POS, website and stock |
| Trading and distribution in India | GST, e-way bills, low license budget | Either; ERPNext if budget leads | Configure GST and migrate from Tally |
| Professional services | Projects, timesheets, payroll | Either; ERPNext includes payroll free | Map billing and payroll rules |
| Multi-country groups | Many companies and currencies | Odoo 20, or ERPNext with custom work | Design entities and consolidation |
How do you decide between Odoo 20 and ERPNext?

Answer seven questions honestly and the choice is usually clear.
- Budget: can you pay per-user licenses for five years, or must the license line be zero?
- Operations: do you need Shop Floor, PLM, quality checks or a strong web store?
- People: do you have, or can you hire, an admin who will own the system?
- Customization: will most changes be fields and forms, or new modules?
- Hosting: do you want a vendor-run cloud, or your own servers?
- AI: do you want AI inside the ERP now, or your own model and keys?
- Support: do you need a local partner outside India?

Odoo 20 vs ERPNext case study: SRMD Global
For a 14-entity education non-profit, we chose ERPNext over Odoo Community because multi-company accounting and lower long-term cost fit its constraints better. SRMD Global operates across 14 countries.
Each country entity ran its own books: QuickBooks in the US, Xero in the UK, Tally in India and manual ledgers in Singapore. Annual consolidation took 11 weeks.
We deployed ERPNext version 15 on Frappe Cloud and built five custom modules, including fund accounting, a multi-currency consolidation engine with daily FX rates, grant lifecycle tracking and a donor portal. Full history moved from QuickBooks, Xero and Tally.
The project took 16 weeks and trained 180+ users. Consolidated quarterly reporting now takes 6 working days instead of 11 weeks, across 7 currencies. Read the SRMD ERPNext multi-entity case study.
The bottom line on Odoo 20 vs ERPNext
Choose Odoo 20 when operational depth, POS, eCommerce, built-in AI and a wide partner market justify the license; choose ERPNext when a zero license line and full open source matter more. Odoo Community sits in between.
Price both over five years, including hosting and people, then test your three most important processes in each. The answer is usually clear after that.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is ERPNext better than Odoo?
+
Neither is better for everyone. ERPNext suits teams that want a zero license cost and full open source. Odoo 20 suits businesses that need deeper manufacturing, POS, eCommerce, built-in AI and a wider partner network.
Is ERPNext really free?
+
Yes, the software is free under GPLv3, with every module included. You still pay for hosting, implementation, support and any paid API services, such as GST APIs in the India Compliance app.
How much does Odoo 20 cost for 25 users?
+
At US list prices billed yearly, Odoo Standard costs about US$9,330 a year for 25 users after a lower first year, and Custom about US$18,300. Odoo Community has no license fee. Implementation is extra.
What is the latest version of ERPNext?
+
ERPNext version 16 is the current stable line. It was released on 12 January 2026, receives frequent minor releases, and Frappe plans to support it until the end of 2029.
Is Odoo Community or ERPNext better for a small business?
+
ERPNext gives you more of the finished ERP for free, including full accounting and payroll. Odoo Community is a good base if you expect to move to Enterprise later or want Odoo's partner market.
Does ERPNext support India GST e-invoicing?
+
Yes, through the India Compliance app. It covers e-invoices, e-way bills, GSTR-1 filing and GSTR-2A and 2B reconciliation. Some API features need a paid India Compliance account.
Can I migrate from ERPNext to Odoo, or from Odoo to ERPNext?
+
Yes. Master data, open items and opening balances move well both ways. Closed history, custom doctypes or modules and workflows take the real effort, so plan the move as a new implementation.
Does ERPNext have AI like Odoo 20?
+
Not built in to the same degree. Odoo 20 includes AI agents billed on IAP credits. In ERPNext, AI is added through custom or third-party apps that use your own model keys.
How long does an Odoo or ERPNext implementation take?
+
Our published Odoo ranges are 4 to 8 weeks for small projects and 8 to 14 weeks for mid-size ones. ERPNext projects follow similar timelines for similar scope; our SRMD multi-entity project took 16 weeks.
