On Odoo Enterprise, the database upgrade itself is free; what costs money is the work around your customizations, data and team. This is the line most cost guides blur.

Odoo's upgrade documentation says that with Enterprise, upgrading to the most recent version is free, "including any support required to rectify potential discrepancies in the upgraded database." The Odoo pricing page also lists upgrades as included in all plans.

The same documentation lists what the free service does not cover:

• cleaning pre-existing data and configurations;
• upgrading in-house or third-party modules that are not under a maintenance contract;
• training on the new version's features and workflows.

An upgrade also does not cover switching from Community to Enterprise, changing hosting type, or migrating from another ERP. Each of those is a separate project with its own budget.

Community edition has no Odoo-run upgrade service. You fund the work yourself or through a partner, usually with the open-source OCA OpenUpgrade scripts plus your own code porting and testing.

How much does it cost to upgrade Odoo by business size?

A partner-run Odoo upgrade typically ranges from about $1,500 for a small business to $30,000 or more for a large, heavily customized one. These are industry estimates, not Odoo list prices.

Odoo upgrade cost by version jump (including Odoo 20)

The bigger the version gap, the higher the Odoo upgrade price, because more models, fields and APIs change between your version and the target. The jump is the clearest single cost signal.

These figures assume a typical customized database. So an Odoo 18 to 20 upgrade cost is moderate because it spans two versions, while an Odoo 17 to 20 upgrade cost climbs because three versions of changes hit every custom module and report.

Odoo's upgrade service moves a database straight to the target version, so you do not pay for each step in between. The extra cost of a big gap sits in your code, reports and testing, not in the database run.

Can you upgrade to Odoo 20 yet, and what does the Odoo 20 migration budget add?

Odoo 20 was released in September 2026, but on 27 October 2026 the target list on Odoo's upgrade platform still stopped at 19.0. Use the gap to test, clean data and port code, so the production move is short once 20.0 opens.

On Odoo's upgrade platform, the "Targeted version" list showed 19.0, 18.0 and 17.0 when we checked. Odoo's support policy page lists Odoo 20.0 with standard support planned to September 2029.

An Odoo 20 migration budget should add these version-specific items on top of the standard upgrade work:

• Integrations: XML-RPC and JSON-RPC are deprecated in Odoo 20, with the common and object services scheduled for removal in Odoo 22, per the external API reference. Plan the move to JSON-2.
• AI features: Odoo 20 AI runs on Odoo IAP credits at EUR 1 per credit, and the setting for your own OpenAI or Gemini keys was removed. Budget credits if you used your own keys on Odoo 19.
• Field Service: Odoo.sh and on-premise users get Field Service merged into Planning at the Odoo 20 upgrade, so dispatch flows need re-testing and short retraining.
• Licence change: the Custom plan rate rose 20% with Odoo 20 while Standard stayed the same. This is ongoing cost, not upgrade cost, but it belongs in the same budget talk.

How do edition and hosting change Odoo upgrade cost?

Your edition and hosting decide how much of the upgrade Odoo does for you and how much you fund. They change the bill more than most owners expect.

Odoo Online major versions must be upgraded every two years, so Online users mostly budget for testing and training. On Odoo.sh, the platform reverts automatically if the production upgrade fails, which lowers risk.

On-premise production upgrades come back without a filestore, so the upgraded database must be merged with your production filestore before go-live. That step, plus server work, is why self-hosted cutovers cost more.

A do-it-yourself upgrade of a small, standard database might cost only hosting plus internal time. With custom code it can consume dozens of developer hours, and Odoo notes that once a production upgrade is done, it is impossible to revert to the previous version on Odoo Online.

What does it cost to stay on an old version?

Staying on an old version is not free: it carries a legacy surcharge, growing upgrade debt and security risk. Waiting has its own price tag.
