Odoo Online Version Differences: Why Two Companies on Odoo 20 Run Different Systems
Why two companies on Odoo 20 run different systems: Odoo Online SaaS releases, mandatory upgrades, custom module limits, plans and how to check your version.
When a vendor, consultant or new hire says "we run Odoo 20", ask which Odoo 20. An Odoo Online database, an Odoo.sh project and a self-hosted server can carry the same label and behave differently. Our Odoo ERP support team starts every ticket by checking that exact version.
This guide is for owners, IT leads and finance teams who compare notes with other Odoo users, buy apps or plan an upgrade. If you are still choosing where to host, start with our Odoo Online vs Odoo.sh vs on-premise guide.
Why is "Odoo 20" not one system?
"Odoo 20" names a major release, but every database adds its own release track, edition, plan, apps and code on top of it. So two companies with the same label can see different menus, features and limits.
These layers sit on top of the version number:
- Release track: Odoo Online can run an intermediate SaaS release; Odoo.sh and on-premise run the major release.
- Edition: Community is free and open source; Enterprise adds more apps, support, upgrades and hosting.
- Plan: One App Free, Standard and Custom unlock different tools.
- Apps and localization: each company installs different apps and country packages.
- Customization: Studio changes, custom modules and third-party apps change screens and logic.
- Data and settings: configuration choices change how the same app behaves.
One Odoo user learned this the hard way. Their Odoo Online database showed "saas~17.1+e (Enterprise Edition)", their own server showed 17.0+e, and Settings crashed after they moved the database across.
For what changed inside the Odoo 20 release itself, see our Odoo 20 guide for business owners. This article covers why the same release still differs from company to company.
How do Odoo versions work on Odoo Online?
Odoo Online runs the major Odoo versions plus intermediate SaaS releases that exist only in Odoo's cloud. Odoo's support history page says SaaS versions "are released every two to three months" and are "only available on Odoo Online".
The 19.x cycle shows the pattern. These dates and statuses come from Odoo's own support table.
| Release | Type | Released | Runs on | Status on Odoo Online |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Odoo 19.0 | Major | September 2025 | Online, Odoo.sh, on-premise | Supported |
| Odoo SaaS 19.1 | Intermediate | January 2026 | Odoo Online only | No longer supported |
| Odoo SaaS 19.2 | Intermediate | March 2026 | Odoo Online only | No longer supported |
| Odoo SaaS 19.3 | Intermediate | May 2026 | Odoo Online only | Supported |
| Odoo SaaS 19.4 | Intermediate | July 2026 | Odoo Online only | Supported |
| Odoo 20.0 | Major | September 2026 | Online, Odoo.sh, on-premise | Supported, planned to September 2029 |
SaaS releases are not eligible for extended support. Each major version gets three years of standard support, and our Odoo version support timeline lists every end date.
The cycle has already restarted. Odoo's public source code shows version 20.1 in development on its main branch, so the next Online-only release after 20.0 is on its way.
Odoo Online vs Odoo.sh vs on-premise: how do Odoo versions differ by hosting?

Your hosting decides which versions you can run, when you get new features, when you must upgrade and what code you can install. The table sums up the differences.
| Factor | Odoo Online | Odoo.sh | On-premise |
|---|---|---|---|
| Version cadence | Major versions plus SaaS releases every 2 to 3 months | Major versions only | Major versions only |
| Example version string | saas~19.4+e | 20.0+e | 20.0 or 20.0+e |
| New features | First, in SaaS releases | At the next major upgrade | At the next major upgrade |
| Upgrades | Mandatory, scheduled by Odoo | Required after support ends, with two extra years | Your choice, can stay indefinitely |
| Custom modules | Not allowed | Allowed | Allowed |
| Odoo Apps Store modules | Not allowed | Allowed | Allowed |
| Extended support | Not available | Some versions, extra fee | Any version, extra fee |
| Edition | Enterprise | Enterprise | Community or Enterprise |
On-premise owners get the most freedom and carry the most risk. Odoo says you "can stay on the same version indefinitely, even if it is not recommended", while Odoo.sh gives you two more years to upgrade once standard support ends.
Why do new Odoo features reach Odoo Online first?
Odoo ships each SaaS release to Online customers first, then folds those changes into the next major version for everyone else. So an Online company can use a feature months before a self-hosted company on the same generation.
Field Service is the clearest recent case. The Odoo 19.2 release notes say "The Field Service app has been discontinued. Its features are now integrated into the Planning app." Online databases got that change in March 2026.
Odoo.sh and on-premise companies on 19.0 still run the old Field Service app. They get the Planning-based version only when they move to Odoo 20. Our Odoo 20 field service guide covers what changes for dispatchers and technicians.
So check the version behind any tutorial or demo before you change a process. Our Odoo 20 release notes mark what changed app by app.
How does the Odoo Online upgrade policy work?
On Odoo Online, upgrades are mandatory: Odoo schedules them, warns you a few weeks ahead, and upgrades the database itself if you do nothing. Odoo's upgrade documentation sets two rules for Online.
- Major versions: an upgrade is mandatory every two years.
- SaaS versions: an upgrade is mandatory "a few weeks after the next version is released", and these releases usually come every two months.
The rolling release process runs in this order:
- Odoo's Upgrade Team runs a silent test upgrade of your database.
- A notice appears in your database a few weeks before the deadline.
- If the test passed in under 20 minutes, you can start the upgrade yourself from the database.
- If the test failed, you request a test upgrade from the database manager and check it.
- If you take no action before the due date, Odoo upgrades the database automatically.
Name an owner for each notice and test key flows on the test copy. A production upgrade cannot be reverted, so that test is your safety net.
Odoo.sh and on-premise databases run on a different clock. On 22 October 2026, the Odoo upgrade platform still listed 19.0 as its highest target, so existing self-hosted databases cannot move to Odoo 20 yet.
Can you run custom modules on Odoo Online?
No, Odoo Online cannot run custom modules or modules from the Odoo Apps Store; you need Odoo.sh or on-premise for that. Odoo's Odoo Online documentation says it plainly: Odoo Online "is incompatible with custom modules or modules from the Odoo Apps Store."
Online companies customize with Studio instead: new fields, views, reports and automations without Python code. Studio needs the Custom plan. Our guide on Odoo Studio vs custom development explains where Studio stops.
Users still hit this wall. On the Odoo forum, a cloud customer asked how to add third-party apps and was told "It is not possible to install third party apps on odoo online instances". The same answer pointed to Odoo.sh or self-hosting.
Leaving Online has a version catch too. Odoo's hosting guide says intermediate versions "are not supported by Odoo.sh or on-premise", so a 19.4 database must first move to the next major version, waiting for its release if needed.
What else makes two Odoo 20 databases different?
Beyond hosting, six layers make each Odoo database unique: edition, installed apps, localization, Studio changes, third-party apps, and data and settings. Compare these before you trust a demo or a peer's advice.
| Layer | What differs | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Edition | Community or Enterprise | Enterprise adds apps such as Studio, plus support and upgrades |
| Installed apps | Which apps are active | Apps add fields, menus and steps to other apps |
| Localization | Country tax and reporting package | Taxes, charts of accounts and e-invoicing differ by country |
| Studio changes | Fields, views and automations | Screens and rules no longer match standard Odoo |
| Third-party apps | App Store or custom modules | Code can change core behavior and slow upgrades |
| Data and settings | Configuration choices | The same app can follow very different workflows |
Edition is the biggest gap. Community is free and open source under LGPLv3, while Enterprise adds more features, functional support, upgrades and hosting. Our Odoo Community vs Enterprise comparison lists the app differences.
Localization is the layer people forget. Odoo publishes fiscal localization packages per country, so an Odoo 20 database in India and one in Belgium handle taxes and reports differently.
Customization changes the upgrade bill. Odoo's upgrade service covers Studio changes "as long as Studio is still installed and the respective subscription is still active". Custom code is covered only with a maintenance of customizations subscription.
How do Odoo pricing plans limit what your version can do?
Your Odoo plan decides which tools you can switch on, so two Odoo 20 databases on different plans have different limits. Odoo's pricing plan page sets out three plans.
| Plan | What you get | Main limits |
|---|---|---|
| One App Free | One app, unlimited users | Odoo Online only; installing Studio or adding companies moves you to Custom |
| Standard | All apps | Odoo Online only; no Studio, multi-company or external API |
| Custom | All apps, Studio, multi-company, external API | Higher price; can also run on Odoo.sh or on-premise |
In the US, Standard costs US$31.10 and Custom US$61.00 per user a month billed yearly. In India they are Rs 725 and Rs 1,350. Our Odoo pricing guide covers first-year discounts and Light Users.
How do you tell exactly which Odoo version you run?
To find your current Odoo version, open Settings, scroll to the About section and read the version string: "saas~19.4" means an Odoo Online SaaS release, while "20.0" means the major release. Then check the other layers with this list.
- Version string: Settings, About shows text such as "Odoo saas~19.4+e (Enterprise Edition)". "saas~" marks an Online-only release, and "+e" marks Enterprise.
- Database manager: on Odoo Online, click the gear next to the database name in the database manager to see its version.
- Edition: the About section says Community Edition or Enterprise Edition.
- Plan: check your subscription for One App Free, Standard or Custom.
- Installed apps: in Apps, use the Installed filter and note every active app.
- Localization: check the fiscal localization package in Accounting settings.
- Studio: confirm whether Studio is installed and which screens it changed.
- Custom and third-party modules: on Odoo.sh or on-premise, list every module that does not come from Odoo.
- Upgrade notice: on Odoo Online, look for an upgrade message and its due date.

Which Odoo version differences matter for your industry?
Version differences hit hardest where a business depends on one app that changed, or on code Odoo Online cannot run. The table shows where we see the most impact.
| Industry | Pain or cost driver | Odoo approach | How iVentureTeam helps |
|---|---|---|---|
| Field service and maintenance | Field Service moved into Planning on Online 19.2 | Online uses Planning now; others switch at Odoo 20 | Retrain dispatch and test the move on a copy |
| Manufacturing | Custom MRP logic and shop-floor add-ons | Odoo.sh or on-premise for custom code | Review modules before each upgrade |
| Retail and eCommerce | Connectors from the Odoo Apps Store | App Store modules need Odoo.sh or on-premise | Pick hosting that fits your connectors |
| Wholesale and distribution | Several companies and intercompany flows | Custom plan for multi-company | Set up companies, routes and rules |
| Professional services | Screens that change every few months on Online | SaaS releases every 2 to 3 months | Release checks and short user briefings |

The bottom line on Odoo versions
"Odoo 20" is a starting point, not a full description: release track, hosting, edition, plan, apps and code decide what your system really is. Two companies with the same label can need very different advice.
Before you copy a peer's setup, buy an app or plan an upgrade, write down your version string, plan, apps, localization and custom modules.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between Odoo Online and Odoo 20?
+
Odoo 20 is a major release. Odoo Online is Odoo's cloud hosting, which runs major releases plus Online-only SaaS releases such as 19.3 and 19.4. An Online database may sit on 19.4 or on 20.0 depending on its upgrade schedule.
What does saas~ mean in an Odoo version?
+
It marks an intermediate SaaS release that runs only on Odoo Online, such as saas~19.4. Odoo.sh and on-premise databases cannot run these versions, so they show a major version such as 20.0 instead.
How often does Odoo Online update?
+
Odoo releases SaaS versions every two to three months. On Online, an upgrade from a SaaS version is mandatory a few weeks after the next one is released, and a major version must be upgraded every two years.
Can I stay on an older version on Odoo Online?
+
Not for long. Odoo warns you a few weeks before a mandatory upgrade and upgrades the database automatically if you take no action by the due date. Only on-premise databases can stay on one version indefinitely.
Can I install third-party apps on Odoo Online?
+
No. Odoo says Odoo Online is incompatible with custom modules and Odoo Apps Store modules. You can customize with Studio on the Custom plan, or move to Odoo.sh or on-premise to run extra code.
Can I move an Odoo Online database to Odoo.sh or on-premise?
+
Yes, but intermediate versions are not supported there. A database on a SaaS release such as 19.4 must first be upgraded to the next major version, waiting for its release if needed.
What is the latest Odoo version in 2026?
+
Odoo 20.0, released in September 2026, is the latest major version. On Odoo Online, SaaS 19.3 and 19.4 are also supported, and 20.1 is already in development.
Is Odoo Online Community or Enterprise?
+
Odoo Online runs Odoo Enterprise, as does Odoo.sh. Odoo Community, the free open-source edition, is self-hosted.
How do I check my Odoo version?
+
Open Settings and scroll to the About section, which shows a string such as "Odoo saas~19.4+e (Enterprise Edition)". On Odoo Online, the gear next to the database name in the database manager also shows it.
