Odoo eCommerce Design: 15 Practices That Lift Conversion in Odoo 19/20 cover

Most Odoo stores look fine and still convert badly. The cause is rarely the theme. It is a slow product grid, a variant picker that hides stock, or a checkout that forces an account. Our Odoo eCommerce development services start with those conversion points, not with a color palette.

This guide is for store owners, marketing leads and Odoo admins who run or plan a shop on Odoo 19 or 20 and want more orders from existing traffic. If you are still deciding whether Odoo fits, read our Odoo eCommerce overview first.

What does good Odoo eCommerce design mean in Odoo 19 and 20?

Good Odoo eCommerce design means every page helps the visitor find, trust and buy with the fewest clicks, and each choice is backed by a setting you can test. Visual polish sits on top of these basics.

Baymard Institute's running average across 50 studies puts cart abandonment at 70.22%. Its checkout surveys name extra costs (40%), slow delivery (20%), distrust with card details (19%), forced account creation (18%) and a long checkout (17%) as the top reasons. Odoo has a setting for most of them.

The 15 practices follow the buyer's path through an Odoo store:

  1. Set the shop grid for desktop and mobile.
  2. Design product cards with a secondary hover image.
  3. Use filters, tags and ribbons for navigation.
  4. Choose a default sort and a floating toolbar.
  5. Build product pages around media and zoom.
  6. Write an eCommerce description and specifications.
  7. Show reviews, stock and alternative products.
  8. Pick the right variant display type.
  9. Use Odoo 20 variant thumbnails and range filters.
  10. Allow guest checkout and add Buy Now.
  11. Shorten address entry and show total cost early.
  12. Build trust with payment logos, terms and returns.
  13. Keep the store fast.
  14. Cover the SEO basics per page and category.
  15. Design the mobile layout on purpose.

How should you set up the Odoo shop page for browsing?

The Odoo shop page converts when the grid, product cards and filters match your catalog size, which covers practices 1 to 4. All of these live in the Odoo website builder's Style tab on the /shop page.

Shop page elementOdoo 19 settingWhy it matters for conversion
Grid sizeSize per page and per line, plus Mobile columnsFewer products per page load faster; two mobile columns stay readable
Product cardProducts Design preset, Description, RatingsRatings on the card pull buyers into the product page
Secondary imageImages, Secondary Image on hoverShows a second angle without a click
FiltersSidebar, Off-screen menu or HideOff-screen filters keep mobile screens clean
ToolbarSort By, Search, Floating, Default SortA floating bar keeps search and sort visible while scrolling

The Odoo product catalog documentation describes each option and warns that the number of products per page can affect loading speed. Start with a modest grid and test.

Odoo 20 adds "On sale" and "In stock" filter pills, and attribute filters list only values used on the current page, so nobody lands on an empty result; see our Odoo 20 eCommerce release notes. Add a few ribbons ("New", "Sale") and customer-visible tags, and keep both lists short.

What makes an Odoo product page convert?

An Odoo product page converts when media, description, specifications and social proof answer the buyer's questions before they scroll, which covers practices 5 to 7. The Odoo product page documentation offers a Carousel or Grid media layout, Zoom on click and Auto-crop.

Next, the words. Write an eCommerce description in the Sales tab of the product form, and show the Specification section "In accordion" under the ordering options, grouped by attribute category, so technical buyers expand it without a long scroll.

Then the proof and the safety net:

  • Reviews: enable Reviews so logged-in portal users can rate the product; the stars then show under the product name.
  • Stock: enable Show Available Quantity below a threshold, write an Out-of-Stock Message and allow "Get notified when back in stock" so a sold-out page still collects a lead.
  • Alternatives and accessories: fill Alternative and Accessory Products, or in Odoo 20 switch on "Automate suggested products" and let a scheduled action fill them.
  • Documents: attach manuals or spec sheets, shown on the page or only after a confirmed order.

Odoo 20 adds a "Request ratings" setting that emails customers a set number of days after the order, which grows your review count without manual chasing.

How do you display product variants in Odoo without confusing buyers?

Odoo product variants convert when the display type matches the attribute: colors as swatches, sizes as pills, long lists as a dropdown, which covers practices 8 and 9. The default Radio buttons are rarely the best storefront choice.

Display typeBest forWatch out for
PillsSizes, capacities, short listsWraps badly past 8 to 10 values
ColorColors and finishesNeeds a real HTML color code per value
ImagePatterns, materials, print designsImage quality matters at small sizes
SelectLong lists such as lengths or voltagesHides options behind a click
RadioTwo or three plain optionsDefault look, little visual help

Display types are set on the attribute form, as the Odoo product variants documentation explains, and the same choice drives Point of Sale.

Stock visibility on variants is a real pain point. An Odoo Online user asked how to hide or grey out unavailable variants because customers clicked each one to learn it was sold out. The only answers were custom or Apps Store modules, which Odoo Online does not allow.

Odoo 20 helps. With "Show Thumbnails" on an attribute, variant images become the choices, and a new "Range" display type gives numeric attributes a slider. Greyed-out variants still need a small module on Odoo.sh or on-premise; see our guide to Odoo Online, Odoo.sh and on-premise hosting.

How do you shorten Odoo checkout and reduce cart abandonment?

Checkout abandonment: Why buyers leave and the Odoo fix

Odoo checkout converts best when guests can buy without an account, total cost appears early and the address step takes seconds, which covers practices 10 and 11. Odoo 19 runs five steps: Order summary, Address, Extra Info if enabled, Payment and Confirmation.

Abandonment reason (Baymard)Share of buyersOdoo setting that addresses it
Extra costs too high40%Tax Indication on prices, delivery methods shown early, free-shipping reward
Delivery too slow20%Odoo 20 "Estimated delivery" date picker and Click & Collect
Distrust with card details19%Known payment providers, Supported Payment Methods in footer
Forced account creation18%Sign in/up at checkout set to Optional or Disabled
Checkout too long17%Buy Now, express checkout, Google Address Validation
Returns policy unclear13%Terms link on product page, Odoo 20 spontaneous returns in portal

The account rule is the biggest single fix. The Sign in/up at checkout setting offers Optional, Disabled or Mandatory. Pick Optional for B2C: guests buy now and register later from the confirmation email. Keep Mandatory for B2B sites only.

Then cut steps for ready buyers:

  • Buy Now: add the button on the product page so a visitor goes straight to the Order summary.
  • Express checkout: when the payment provider supports it, Odoo shows a wallet button that skips the contact form.
  • Address validation: enable Google Address Validation with a Places API key so addresses autocomplete as the customer types.
  • Extra Step: switch it off unless you need the data; Odoo 20 can restrict it to chosen product categories.

The Odoo checkout documentation covers each option. Odoo 20 also adds a loyalty progress bar in the cart and GA4 events such as add_to_cart and purchase, so you can measure each change.

Catch the carts you still lose. Odoo's abandoned cart follow-up sits under "Follow up abandoned carts" with a "Send after" delay; it reaches only customers who entered contact details or were logged in. Odoo 20 adds a WhatsApp template beside the email one.

How do you build trust on an Odoo store?

Trust on an Odoo store comes from visible payment methods, honest tax and stock information and a clear returns path, which is practice 12. Use the eCommerce footer template, which shows active payment methods automatically, and link terms, delivery and returns pages from it.

Turn on Tax Indication so prices say whether VAT is included, set an Order Confirmation email or WhatsApp template, and in Odoo 20 enable "Allow Spontaneous Returns" so the portal shows a Return button for a set number of days.

How do you keep an Odoo eCommerce site fast?

An Odoo eCommerce site stays fast when you limit products per page, rely on Odoo's WebP conversion, avoid heavy third-party themes and size hosting for your traffic, which is practice 13. Speed is both a conversion and an SEO factor.

The Odoo SEO documentation states that uploaded images are compressed and converted to WebP automatically, while third-party themes may not compress images efficiently. The rest is discipline:

  • Products per page: 20 to 24 on the shop grid is a good start.
  • Catalog size: one owner with about 2,900 published products reported that a 20-product shop page took 12 to 13 seconds to load; large catalogs need caching and hosting attention.
  • Snippets and fonts: two fonts, few animated blocks, no autoplay video above the fold.
  • Targets: Google's Core Web Vitals thresholds are 2.5 seconds for Largest Contentful Paint, 200 milliseconds for Interaction to Next Paint and 0.1 for Cumulative Layout Shift.

Test a paid theme's speed on a trial database before buying; our post on the best Odoo eCommerce theme for Odoo 19 and 20 explains how themes affect speed and upgrades.

Which Odoo SEO basics matter most for a shop?

For an Odoo shop, the SEO basics are a unique title and description per product and category, alt text on every image, category content and clean structured data, which is practice 14. Odoo generates the plumbing; you supply the words.

Odoo's SEO tool edits each page's title and description tags, and the image Description field becomes the alt attribute. Odoo generates a /sitemap.xml that refreshes every 12 hours, adds hreflang tags, and marks product pages with schema.org microdata so Google can show price and rating snippets.

Category pages deserve the most attention. Each eCommerce category has its own indexable URL, and blocks dropped under the category name appear only when that category is filtered. Write 100 to 200 words per key category; Odoo's documentation notes this content helps organic traffic.

Odoo 20 adds a /llms.txt file for AI crawlers, one Google tag field that accepts a G- or GTM- id, and breadcrumbs on static pages, all listed in our Odoo 20 Website release notes.

How do you design the Odoo shop for mobile?

Mobile design in Odoo is a separate set of decisions: columns, cropping, filters and checkout buttons all have mobile-specific settings, which is practice 15. These Odoo website design tips assume most visits come from phones, so design there first.

  • Columns: set Mobile columns on the shop grid to two; the Odoo 20 Products grid block has separate desktop and mobile column settings.
  • Cropping: use Auto-crop on product media so tall images do not push the price below the fold.
  • Filters: choose the Off-screen menu so filters open in a slide-out and the grid keeps the full width.
  • Toolbar: enable Floating so search, sort and the pricelist selector stay reachable while scrolling.
  • Checkout: express checkout wallets matter most on phones, where typing an address is the slowest step.

Our free Odoo project estimate tool gives a cost and timeline range for a storefront build that includes this mobile work.

Which Odoo eCommerce design practices matter most by industry?

The same 15 practices apply everywhere, but each industry has one or two that decide the sale. The table shows where to spend design time first.

Odoo eCommerce design case study: BeRobin BV

A Dutch retailer fixed a storefront that broke on mobile and a checkout that cost conversions, while automating the catalog behind it. BeRobin BV is a fast-growing eCommerce and retail company in the Netherlands.

The catalog grew faster than the processes around it. Products were imported by hand from GS1 databases, the website theme was not responsive on mobile and tablet, and friction in the checkout flow was costing conversions.

iVentureTeam reworked the responsive layout across all screen sizes and fixed the cart, product detail, sorting and checkout workflows, with real-time validation of stock status, pricing and customer input. The GS1 import was automated and a store-credit engine applies credit at checkout.

The project took 14 weeks. BeRobin now runs a faster, mobile-friendly storefront that lifted conversion rates, with four storefront flows reworked and the product feed fully automated. Read the BeRobin Odoo eCommerce and GS1 automation case study.

The bottom line on Odoo eCommerce design

Odoo eCommerce design that converts is a sequence of small, testable settings: a sensible grid, a product page that answers questions, variants that show stock, a guest-friendly checkout and a fast mobile layout. Odoo 19 has the controls, and Odoo 20 adds more.

Work through the 15 practices in order, measure each change, and spend custom development only where a setting does not exist. That keeps the budget on the pages that make money.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Odoo good for eCommerce website design?

+

Yes for most small and mid-size stores. Odoo 19 and 20 include a drag-and-drop editor, product card presets, variant display types, configurable checkout steps and automatic WebP images. Very large catalogs and heavy custom design need Odoo.sh or on-premise hosting.

How do I improve conversion on an Odoo shop?

+

Start with guest checkout, a Buy Now button and express checkout. Then fix the product page with zoom, reviews, stock messages and alternatives. Finally reduce products per page, test speed and set the mobile grid to two columns. Measure each change with GA4 events.

How many products should an Odoo shop page show?

+

Start around 20 to 24 per page with four columns on desktop and two on mobile. Odoo's documentation notes that more products per page can slow loading. Large catalogs should rely on categories, filters and search rather than long pages.

Can customers check out as guests in Odoo?

+

Yes. In Website Settings, set "Sign in/up at checkout" to Optional or Disabled. Optional lets guests buy and register later from the confirmation email. The setting is per website, so a B2B site can require sign-in while a B2C site does not.

How do I show product variants as color swatches in Odoo?

+

Open the attribute form and set Display Type to Color, then give each value an HTML color code. Use Pills for sizes and Image for patterns. In Odoo 20, enable "Show Thumbnails" on the attribute to display variant images as the choices.

Does Odoo send abandoned cart emails?

+

Yes. Enable "Follow up abandoned carts" in Website Settings, set the "Send after" delay and edit the email template. Only carts with customer contact details or a logged-in user receive the reminder. Odoo 20 adds a WhatsApp template option.

Is Odoo eCommerce fast enough for SEO?

+

It can be. Odoo compresses images to WebP, generates a sitemap, adds hreflang tags and product microdata. Speed then depends on products per page, theme weight, snippet count and hosting. Test the shop and product pages against Core Web Vitals, not only the homepage.

What changes for eCommerce design in Odoo 20?

+

Odoo 20 adds variant thumbnails, a range filter, "On sale" and "In stock" filter pills, a products grid block with mobile columns, an estimated delivery date picker, a loyalty progress bar, automated review requests, WhatsApp cart follow-up and more GA4 events.

Do I need a custom theme for a good Odoo store design?

+

Not usually. Built-in themes plus the editor's product card presets, fonts, shadows and blocks cover most stores. A custom theme pays off when brand rules are strict, the catalog needs special layouts such as fitment search, or you want reusable snippets on Odoo.sh.
