Best Odoo eCommerce Theme for Odoo 19 and 20: Choose, Customize, Cost cover

Most "best Odoo eCommerce theme" lists are written by theme vendors ranking their own product. This guide is vendor-neutral: how to choose, how far to customize and what each route costs. When a theme cannot match your brand, our Odoo theme development services build one around it.

It is written for store owners, marketing leads and eCommerce managers on Odoo 19 or planning Odoo 20. If you are still deciding whether Odoo should run your store at all, start with our Odoo eCommerce guide.

What makes the best Odoo eCommerce theme?

The best Odoo eCommerce theme is the one that fits your hosting, version, catalog and brand with the least code you have to maintain. Visual appeal is the last filter, not the first.

A theme in Odoo is a module. Odoo's own developer guide says themes "are packaged like any Odoo module", with SCSS, QWeb templates, snippets and website builder options. That means a theme carries the same upgrade and compatibility risk as any other module.

Judge every candidate on these points:

  • Hosting fit: can it be installed on Odoo Online, Odoo.sh or your own server?
  • Version fit: is it published for Odoo 19, Odoo 20, or both?
  • Edition fit: does it support Community, Enterprise, or both?
  • Dependencies: which apps does it require, such as eCommerce, Wishlist, Loyalty or Blog?
  • License: LGPL-3 or the Odoo Proprietary License (OPL-1), which limits copying and resale.
  • Editability: can marketing change pages in the website builder without a developer?

Odoo website themes: built-in, marketplace or custom?

Odoo website themes: Which theme route fits your store?

Odoo website themes come in three forms, and each one trades upfront cost against control and upgrade effort. The table compares them.

Built-in themes are chosen when you first create a website. The Odoo theme documentation shows how the Theme tab then sets colors, fonts, buttons, headings and page layout for every page.

Odoo eCommerce theme vs Odoo backend theme: what is the difference?

An Odoo eCommerce theme styles the website your customers see, while an Odoo backend theme styles the screens your own team works in every day. They solve different problems, and many companies need both.

The Apps Store lists both kinds under Themes, which confuses buyers. Check the category on each listing before you compare prices or demos.

A storefront theme affects sales directly. A backend theme affects how fast staff find records, approve orders and post invoices. On Odoo Community, a backend theme also gives users a cleaner app menu than the standard one.

Lumen Backend Theme by iVentureTeam

Lumen is our own backend theme for Odoo Community 19 and 20, published on the Odoo Apps Store. It changes how the backend looks without changing how Odoo works.

The Lumen Backend Theme on the Odoo Apps Store gives each user a choice of layout and look:

  • Two layouts: an app sidebar, or a home page grid of every app with one search box.
  • Brand control: 12 color palettes or your own colors, 13 fonts and a login page designer.
  • Faster work: split view for list and form, global search with the / key, and a recent screens switcher.
  • Dark mode: Light, Dark or System per user, across every Lumen screen.
  • Governed: admins save a company default and lock settings that must stay the same.
  • No lock-in: it depends only on the web module, and uninstalling it restores Odoo's own look.

Lumen is LGPL-3 licensed and was listed at US$27.98 on 29 October 2026. The listing notes that backend themes may not work with Odoo Enterprise, so test it on a copy of your database first.

Which Odoo 19 theme options do you get without buying one?

Every Odoo 19 database already includes a set of built-in themes plus a Theme tab that changes the whole site's look without code. Many small stores never need more than this.

In the website editor you can switch theme, pick a page layout, and set five theme colors: three main colors and two light and dark colors. Odoo turns them into color presets that each building block can use. Fonts, buttons, links and input fields are styled in the same tab.

This route works on every hosting option, including Odoo Online. It also upgrades cleanly, because Odoo maintains the built-in themes with each release.

What changes for an Odoo 20 theme?

Odoo 20 adds more design control to the standard editor, so the gap between a free and a paid Odoo 20 theme is smaller than before. It also means older themes need checking before you upgrade.

Our Odoo 20 Website release notes list 60 Website changes. The ones that matter most for theme choice are:

  • Color palette preview: see every color preset on demo content before you apply it.
  • Font weight selector: set light, normal and bold weights for headings and paragraphs.
  • Page layout options: Full, Boxed, Framed and Postcard layouts with backgrounds set in one place.
  • Blurred headers: a frosted glass effect for headers placed over page content.
  • Header disclaimer bar: a site-wide announcement banner above the header.
  • Adaptive images: saved images get several sizes, so phones download smaller files.

On the shop side, our Odoo 20 eCommerce release notes cover 38 changes, including a Products Grid building block, range sliders for numeric attributes and "On sale" and "In stock" filters. A theme that overrides shop templates must be checked against all of them.

Can you use a paid theme on Odoo Online?

No, a paid Apps Store theme or a custom theme module cannot be installed on Odoo Online. You need Odoo.sh or on-premise hosting for either one.

Odoo's own Odoo Online documentation says it "is incompatible with custom modules or modules from the Odoo Apps Store". Since a theme is a module, this rule covers themes too.

Odoo.sh and on-premise hosting need the Custom plan, listed on the Odoo pricing page at US$61.00 per user a month billed yearly in the US. Community edition on your own server can also run many themes. Our guide to Odoo Online vs Odoo.sh vs on-premise explains the hosting trade-offs.

How do you compare Odoo Apps Store themes?

Compare Odoo Apps Store themes on version, hosting, dependencies and license before you look at demos. A good demo on the wrong version is no use to you.

On 29 October 2026 the Apps Store theme list for Odoo 19 showed 987 results, while the Odoo 20 theme list showed 403. Both lists mix storefront themes with backend themes, which only restyle the internal interface.

Use this checklist on each product page:

  1. Filter by your version: open the listing for the exact series you run or plan to run.
  2. Check hosting badges: confirm Odoo.sh or On Premise support for your setup.
  3. Read dependencies: storefront themes often require eCommerce plus apps such as Wishlist, Loyalty or Blog, and each one adds modules you must keep up to date.
  4. Read the license: under OPL-1 you may use and modify the theme, but you may not publish, resell or sublicense copies.
  5. Test on a copy: install it on a staging database with your real products, not demo data.
  6. Check the vendor's track record: how fast did it ship its Odoo 19 and Odoo 20 versions?

Paid themes also bring third-party code into your upgrade path. Our article on third-party Odoo module costs explains why that matters at upgrade time.

How much does Odoo theme customization change?

Odoo theme customization ranges from color and font settings anyone can change to new QWeb templates that only a developer should touch. The deeper you go, the more each upgrade costs.

Odoo theme development cost: what drives it?

Odoo theme development cost depends on the design source, the number of unique page templates, the building blocks you need and how far the design departs from standard Odoo. A theme price alone never tells you the full cost.

The main cost drivers are:

  • Design source: building from approved design files costs less than designing from scratch.
  • Page templates: home, category, product, cart, checkout, blog and landing pages each add work.
  • Custom building blocks: reusable sections your team can drop onto new pages.
  • Responsive tuning: desktop, tablet and mobile breakpoints tested on real devices.
  • Shop overrides: changes to product pages, filters, cart and checkout.
  • Speed and SEO: image handling, script weight and clean page structure.

For illustration only: a theme that needs 80 to 200 hours of design and build work, at the US$20 to US$100 an hour developer rates in our guide to Odoo developer costs, lands between US$1,600 and US$20,000. Your real number comes from your own scope.

A paid theme adds setup hours and vendor porting delays to its price. For a quick budget across your whole store, try the Odoo project estimate tool.

What breaks when you upgrade an Odoo theme?

Themes break at upgrade time when they override templates that Odoo renamed or removed in the new version. The shop is usually where it shows first.

On the Odoo forum, a store owner reported that after moving to Odoo 19 products were no longer clickable and a shop template was not found. The suggested cause was a custom theme or inherited view that still pointed to a template renamed in the new version.

Protect your store with these steps:

  1. List every override: record which shop and website templates your theme changes.
  2. Upgrade a copy first: test the theme on an upgraded staging database.
  3. Click through the buying path: category, product, variants, cart, checkout and payment.
  4. Check mobile: most theme bugs show on small screens first.

Our post on Odoo 20 custom module upgrades covers the same process for other custom code.

Which Odoo eCommerce website design fits your industry?

The right Odoo eCommerce website design depends on how your customers search and buy, not on the theme's demo pages. Each industry needs different strengths from the theme.

How do you choose the best Odoo eCommerce theme for your store?

Answer six questions in order and the right route is usually clear. Stop at the first answer that rules a route out.

  1. Hosting: are you on Odoo Online? If yes, use a built-in theme and the Theme tab.
  2. Version: is the theme published for the version you will run in 12 months?
  3. Brand: can Theme tab settings and building blocks get you close enough?
  4. Features: do you need shop features the standard editor cannot give you?
  5. Team: will marketing edit pages, or will a developer make every change?
  6. Budget over time: have you priced the next two upgrades, not just the purchase?

If most answers point to a custom build, our Odoo eCommerce development services cover the store setup around the theme. For a review of what Odoo's shop does well and badly, read our Odoo eCommerce review.

Odoo theme case study: CloudTRACK

A UK fleet-tracking and workforce-management company replaced a design-locked web presence with a custom Odoo theme its own team can edit. Generic Odoo themes could not reproduce its approved designs.

Off-the-shelf themes forced layout compromises, and small content changes needed developer time. The site also had to live inside Odoo, so website, CRM and back office stayed on one platform.

We rebuilt every page template in QWeb with SCSS matching CloudTRACK's typography, color and spacing rules. Sections became reusable Odoo building blocks, tuned across desktop, tablet and mobile, with all content editable in the website builder.

Delivery took 6 weeks, with design-to-build fidelity signed off and zero third-party theme dependencies to maintain. Marketing now publishes pages without developer tickets. Read the CloudTRACK custom Odoo theme case study.

The bottom line on the best Odoo eCommerce theme

Start with a built-in theme, buy a paid theme only when it is ready for your version and hosting, and build a custom theme when your brand demands an exact match. Price every route over two upgrades, not one purchase.

The theme that costs least on day one is often not the one that costs least over three years. Keep your code light and your content editable.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best Odoo eCommerce theme?

+

There is no single best theme. The best one runs on your hosting, is published for your Odoo version and matches your brand with the least custom code. For many stores, a built-in theme tuned in the Theme tab is enough.

Are Odoo themes free?

+

Odoo's built-in website themes come with Odoo at no extra charge. Themes on the Odoo Apps Store can be free or paid, and paid ones we checked were listed from about US$25 to about US$370 as a one-off price.

Can I install a custom theme on Odoo Online?

+

No. Odoo Online does not accept custom modules or Apps Store modules, and a theme is a module. You need Odoo.sh or on-premise hosting to install a paid or custom theme.

How much does Odoo theme development cost?

+

It depends on the design source, page templates, custom building blocks and responsive work. Treat any number as a scope-based estimate, and include the cost of porting the theme at each major upgrade.

How long does it take to build a custom Odoo theme?

+

A simple theme can be ready in days to a couple of weeks. A full custom build from approved designs takes longer; our CloudTRACK theme was delivered in 6 weeks.

Will my Odoo 19 theme work on Odoo 20?

+

Not automatically. Themes are modules, so each one must be ported and tested on Odoo 20. On 29 October 2026 the Apps Store listed far fewer themes for Odoo 20 than for Odoo 19.

Do Odoo themes work with Community edition?

+

Many do. Check the edition badges on each Apps Store page, because some themes support Community and Enterprise while others support only one.

Can I change my Odoo theme later?

+

Yes. The Theme tab has a Switch Theme option for built-in themes. Moving away from a paid or custom theme needs testing, because pages built with its own blocks may not display the same way.
