Odoo 19 vs Odoo 20: Which to Choose for a New or Running Project
Odoo 19 vs Odoo 20 for a new or running project: a decision framework by go-live date, modules and customization level, plus switch costs and support.
Most Odoo 19 vs Odoo 20 articles list new features. A project team needs a different answer: which version to build on, and whether to change course halfway. Our Odoo implementation services start every project with that version decision.
This guide is for owners, project sponsors and IT leads who are about to sign, or are already mid-build. If you already run Odoo in production and want to know when to move, read our guide on whether to upgrade to Odoo 20 on release day instead.
Odoo 19 vs Odoo 20: what actually differs for a project?
For a project team, Odoo 19 vs Odoo 20 differs on support window, AI cost model, server requirements and module readiness, not just features. The table shows the differences that change a project plan.
| Factor | Odoo 19 | Odoo 20 |
|---|---|---|
| Released | September 2025 | September 2026 |
| End of standard support | September 2028 (planned) | September 2029 (planned) |
| AI features | Own OpenAI or Gemini keys on Odoo.sh and on-premise | Odoo AI credits only, own keys removed |
| Python minimum | 3.10 | 3.12 |
| PostgreSQL minimum | 13 | 16 |
| Third-party apps | Mature, most apps have a 19 release | Still catching up after launch |
| Upgrade target today | Available | Not yet open for existing databases |
Odoo's support table lists both versions as fully supported on Odoo Online, Odoo.sh and on-premise. For every functional change, see our Odoo 20 release notes, which count 585 changes across 52 apps.
Your subscription price does not depend on which of the two you run. The Custom plan rise and the new Light User tier that came with Odoo 20 pricing apply either way, as our guide to things to know before using Odoo 20 explains.
Can a running Odoo 19 project switch to Odoo 20 today?
Not through Odoo's own upgrade service yet: an Odoo 19 database cannot be upgraded to 20.0 until Odoo opens that target. That single fact shapes every mid-project decision right now.
When we checked Odoo's upgrade page on 30 October 2026, the target versions offered were 17.0, 18.0 and 19.0. A project team that wants Odoo 20 today has only three real options:
- Rebuild on a fresh Odoo 20 database: reapply configuration, reload master data and retest. Practical only when little has been built.
- Wait for the 20.0 target: keep building on 19, then request an upgraded test database once Odoo allows it.
- Go live on 19 and upgrade later: the usual answer for projects already deep in build or testing.
Odoo's upgrade documentation adds a second condition. A database with custom modules "cannot be upgraded until a version of your custom modules is available for the target version of Odoo." So code readiness, not the calendar, sets the real switch date.
Should I wait for Odoo 20 or go live on Odoo 19? Decide by go-live date

Your planned go-live date is the strongest single signal: the further away it is, the stronger the case for Odoo 20. The table is our rule of thumb from project work, not an Odoo rule.
| Your project stage | Planned go-live | Our recommendation |
|---|---|---|
| Not started, partner not yet chosen | Mid-2027 or later | Start on Odoo 20 |
| Discovery or design, little configured | 6+ months away | Start on Odoo 20 now |
| Build under way, light customization | 3 to 6 months away | Either; rebuild on 20 only if cheap |
| Build under way, heavy custom code | 3 to 6 months away | Finish on 19, upgrade later |
| Testing or training under way | Under 3 months | Go live on 19 |
| Live on 19, stable | Already live | Stay; plan the 20 upgrade |
Why does go-live matter so much? A project that goes live on Odoo 19 in early 2027 still has about 18 months of standard support. That is enough time to stabilize, then run a calm Odoo 19 to 20 upgrade.
A project that goes live on 19 in late 2027 has much less runway. It will face an upgrade soon after users settle in, which is the outcome most teams want to avoid.
Partners on the Odoo forum note that new releases "typically take around 4 to 6 months to mature" in real use. A go-live in spring 2027 or later lands after that window, which is one more reason long projects should start on 20.
How do your modules and localization change the Odoo 19 or 20 choice?
If any module you depend on is not ready for Odoo 20, build on Odoo 19, whatever your go-live date. A missing app or localization feature can stop a project faster than any version debate.
Check these before you commit to Odoo 20:
- Localization: your country's chart of accounts, tax reports and e-invoicing connector, tested on an Odoo 20 database.
- Third-party apps: every Odoo Apps Store or community module, with a published version 20 release and an active maintainer.
- Connectors: payment, shipping, marketplace and bank feeds, confirmed on Odoo 20.
- Hosting fit: Odoo Online does not allow custom modules or Apps Store modules, per Odoo's Online documentation.
- Integrations: any script using the RPC `db` service, which Odoo 20 removed.
The module list itself also affects the answer. A project limited to standard apps such as Sales, Inventory and Accounting can usually start on 20 safely. Our guide on how to choose Odoo modules helps you build that list in phases.
How does customization level change the Odoo 19 vs Odoo 20 decision?
The more custom Python code your project carries, the more a version switch costs, so heavy customization favors finishing on the version you started. Light configuration moves between versions with little effort.
| Customization level | Typical examples | Effect of a switch | Lean towards |
|---|---|---|---|
| Configuration only | Settings, workflows, reports, access rules | Reapply and retest | Odoo 20 if not live soon |
| Studio changes | New fields, views, automated actions | Recheck in the new version | Odoo 20 if few changes |
| A few custom modules | Extra fields, reports, small logic | Port and retest each module | Depends on go-live date |
| Heavy custom code | Custom MRP, pricing or integration logic | Port, refactor, full regression test | Version you started on |
Studio fields, automated actions and edited mail templates live in the database, not in code. Count them as custom work when you size a switch. Our guide to Odoo Studio vs custom development explains the difference.
Odoo's own advice for customized databases begins with "Stop the developments and challenge them." A version decision is a good moment to cut custom code you do not need. Our post on Odoo 20 custom modules covers what breaks.
What does switching Odoo version mid-project cost?
Switching mid-project costs the configuration rework, module porting and test cycles you repeat, which is usually more than a planned upgrade after go-live. The steps below show where the effort goes.
- Freeze scope: stop new build work so the target does not move.
- Inventory: list configuration, Studio changes, custom modules, third-party apps and integrations.
- Port code: make each custom module install on an empty Odoo 20 database.
- Rebuild or upgrade data: rebuild on a fresh database now, or wait for the 20.0 target and upgrade a copy.
- Repeat testing: rerun every business flow and user acceptance test you already passed on 19.
- Retrain: update training material and screenshots for changed screens.
For comparison, our published estimate for a later Odoo 19 to 20 upgrade is $1,500 to $3,000 for a lightly customized database (industry estimate, not an Odoo price). Heavy customization can reach $30,000+, as our upgrade cost guide shows.
A planned upgrade after go-live also uses Odoo's upgrade service, which handles the standard data migration. A mid-project rebuild repeats work your team has already paid for, so switch only when little has been built.
If your project is stalled and you are also thinking of changing partner, read our guide on changing Odoo partners mid-project. Do not change version and partner at once without a written takeover plan.
How do hosting and support dates affect Odoo 19 vs Odoo 20?
Hosting decides how long you can stay on Odoo 19 after go-live, and on Odoo Online that window is the shortest. The table sums up Odoo's documented rules.
| Hosting | Upgrade rule (Odoo documentation) | What it means for 19 vs 20 |
|---|---|---|
| Odoo Online | Major version upgrade mandatory every two years | A 19 go-live faces an upgrade sooner |
| Odoo.sh | Two more years to upgrade after three years of support | 19 stays workable into 2030 |
| On-premise | You can stay on a version indefinitely | Support ends September 2028 (planned) |
On-premise and Odoo.sh teams should also check servers. Odoo 20 needs Python 3.12 and PostgreSQL 16 or later, up from Python 3.10 and PostgreSQL 13 on Odoo 19. A new project can size its server for 20 from day one.
Odoo also lets you upgrade "from any version to any major version still under standard support." The Odoo 19 support end date is September 2028 (planned), and an Odoo 19 go-live can later move straight to Odoo 20. Our Odoo version support timeline shows each date.
Odoo 19 vs Odoo 20 for AI features: does AI change the answer?
Yes, if AI is in scope: Odoo 20 runs every AI feature on paid Odoo AI credits, while Odoo 19 on Odoo.sh or on-premise used your own OpenAI or Gemini keys. Anything AI you build on 19 will change at the upgrade.
Odoo 20 AI runs on Odoo AI IAP credits at EUR 1 per credit, and the settings for your own provider keys are gone. If you design AI flows on Odoo 19 with your own keys, budget for credits and retesting when you move to 20.
So for AI-heavy projects with go-live six months out or more, start on Odoo 20 and design around credits from the start. Our breakdown of Odoo 20 AI features and IAP credit costs helps you size that line.
Odoo 19 or Odoo 20 by industry
Industries that depend on changed Odoo 20 apps gain most from starting on 20, while those relying on mature third-party connectors often do better on 19 for now. The table shows where we usually land.
| Industry | Pain or cost driver | Odoo approach | How iVentureTeam helps |
|---|---|---|---|
| Manufacturing | Custom BOM, routing and costing code | 24 Manufacturing changes in Odoo 20 | Size porting effort before choosing |
| Retail and eCommerce | Store, POS and marketplace connectors | 38 eCommerce and 20 POS changes | Check every connector for a 20 release |
| Field service | Scheduling crews and jobs | Field Service merged into Planning in 20 | Build on 20 to avoid retraining dispatchers |
| Professional services | Expense and billing flows | Approved expenses become draft bills in 20 | Design billing once, on the target version |
| Distribution | Third-party WMS and EDI apps | Standard Inventory on either version | Confirm app readiness, then decide |
The change counts come from our app-by-app Odoo 20 release notes. For field service, Odoo Online users already received the Planning merge in version 19.2, so the gap applies to Odoo.sh and on-premise.
A five-step framework for choosing Odoo 19 or Odoo 20

Work through five questions in order and the Odoo 19 or 20 implementation choice is usually clear within a day. Stop at the first question that gives a firm answer.
- Go-live date: under three months away, stay on 19; six or more months away, lean to 20.
- Module readiness: any required app or localization not ready on 20, build on 19.
- Custom code: heavy custom modules already built, finish on 19 and upgrade later.
- Hosting: on Odoo Online, a 19 go-live meets a mandatory upgrade sooner, so lean to 20.
- AI scope: AI in the first phase, build on 20 and budget credits.

The bottom line on Odoo 19 vs Odoo 20
New projects with a go-live in mid-2027 or later should start on Odoo 20; projects already deep in build should finish on Odoo 19 and upgrade later. Neither version is a wrong choice on support grounds.
The costly mistake is switching late without a plan. Check your modules and custom code, confirm the go-live date, and decide once. Then protect that decision from scope creep.

Frequently Asked Questions
Should I start a new Odoo implementation on Odoo 19 or Odoo 20?
+
Start on Odoo 20 if go-live is six or more months away and your localization and apps work on it. Choose Odoo 19 only when a required module is not ready for 20 or go-live is very close.
Can I upgrade an Odoo 19 database to Odoo 20 now?
+
Not through Odoo's upgrade service yet. On 30 October 2026, its highest target was still 19.0. Once 20.0 opens, request an upgraded test database first and test your key flows.
Should I switch to Odoo 20 in the middle of my project?
+
Only if little has been built and go-live is months away. If testing or training has started, go live on 19 and plan the upgrade after the system settles.
How long is Odoo 19 supported?
+
Odoo lists standard support for Odoo 19 until September 2028 (planned). Odoo.sh adds two more years to complete the upgrade, and on-premise users can stay longer without security updates.
Is Odoo 20 stable enough for a go-live?
+
Odoo 20 is a fully supported release, but partners often say a new version takes four to six months to mature. Test accounting, POS closing and your connectors on 20 before you commit.
Does Odoo 20 cost more than Odoo 19?
+
The subscription is priced per user, not per version, so the plan price is the same either way. AI is different: Odoo 20 AI uses paid Odoo AI credits, while Odoo 19 could use your own keys.
Will my custom modules work on Odoo 20?
+
Not without porting. Each custom module must install on an empty Odoo 20 database before an upgrade can run. The effort depends on what the module changes and how many apps it touches.
What does a later Odoo 19 to 20 upgrade cost?
+
Our industry estimate is $1,500 to $3,000 for a lightly customized database. Heavy custom code can push it to $30,000 or more, so keep customization lean during the build.
